Portland Beavers News Release

PORTLAND, Ore. - Christian Colonel tallied four hits, Ian Stewart hit his second home run of the series and Sean Smith turned in 5 2/3 strong innings as the Colorado Springs Sky Sox defeated the Portland Beavers 12-2 Friday night in front of 5,299 at PGE Park.

All eight starting position players had at least one hit and a run scored, and all but two drove in at least one run for the Sky Sox, who have won five of their last six and eight of their last 10.

Seth Smith drew four walks and was 1-for-2 with an RBI and three runs scored, Jayson Nix collected three hits and scored twice, and Stewart, Colonel and Sean Barker drove in two runs apiece.

Sean Smith, who faced two batters over the minimum over the first five innings, was charged with two runs and four hits for the Sky Sox (40-40), who beat the Beavers for the first time this season.

A costly, bases-loaded error with two outs in the first yielded the Sky Sox three runs. Barker's looping fly ball glanced off the glove of second baseman Matt Antonelli in shallow center, allowing all three base runners to score.

The Sky Sox got back-to-back RBI singles from Seth Smith and Colonel in the second and a sacrifice fly from Barker that increased their lead to 6-0.

Portland's Cesar Ramos (7-7) took the defeat, though three of his six runs allowed were unearned. He went 3 2/3 innings for the Beavers, allowing seven hits and three walks.

Stewart connected on a two-run homer to center field off reliever Adam Bass, Rick Guarno hit an RBI double and Doug Bernier added a run-scoring single in the four-run sixth.

Chip Ambres put the Beavers (41-38) on the board with an RBI double in the bottom of the sixth, later scoring on a two-out single by Will Venable.

The series continues Saturday night at PGE Park. First pitch is 7:05 p.m.

NOTES: Before the game, the Padres signed veteran pitcher Brett Tomko and optioned left-handed pitcher Justin Hampson to Portland ... Stewart was hit by a pitch in each of the first two innings.
