Salem Red Sox News Release
Wilmington, DE-The Salem Avalanche, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Houston Astros, saw the Wilmington Blue Rocks score six runs in the first inning to grab an 8-3 game two victory Friday night at Frawley Stadium. Wilmington (2-6 2nd half) has scored eight first-inning runs against Salem (3-5 2nd half) in the last two days.
For the second day in a row, the Avs scored a run in the top of the first only to see the lead melt away. With one out, pitcher Mario Santiago hit Tim Torres with a 1-1 pitch. Then, Mark Ori seared a line drive down the right field line to score Torres and earn the lead for Salem.
In the home half, though, Wilmington snared the lead base by base. Derrick Robinson opened with an infield single and stole second base. After Chris McConnell walked against Corey Bass, the pair executed a double steal. As new Salem catcher Jimmy Goethals threw to third on Robinson, the ball rolled into left field, scoring Robinson. After Joe Dickerson walked, Jeff Bianchi's single to the right side of the infield scored McConnell and the Rocks led 2-1. Once Kurt Mertins loaded the bases with a single, Josh Johnson's base hit scored McConnell. Matt Morizio then walked to score a run and push Corey Bass out of the game. Joel Santo entered and was welcomed by a two-run double from Anthony Seratelli to give Wilmington a 6-1 lead.
In the fifth, Salem attempted to begin a comeback as Mark Ori posted his Carolina League-leading 53rd RBI, a single to score Jordan Parraz. The Avs, though, could only plate one more as Wilmington salted the game away with a two-run eighth.
In the game, the Blue Rocks drew 11 walks, a season high for an Avalanche opponent. For the Avs, Ori extended his hit streak to six with a two-for-four night.
The rubber match of the series comes Saturday at 6:05 with righty Erick Abreu facing Wilmington's Matt Kniginyzky.
