Dodgers' Jason Schmidt to Start in Fresno on Saturday

June 27, 2008 - Pacific Coast League (PCL) Fresno Grizzlies

FRESNO, CA - According to the official website of the Los Angeles Dodgers, injured pitcher Jason Schmidt will start for the Las Vegas 51's on Saturday night at Chukchansi Park when they take on the Grizzlies. Schmidt, a three-time All-Star and former San Francisco Giant, underwent career-threatening shoulder surgery 12 months ago.

Following six years with San Francisco, Schimidt signed as a free agent with the Dodgers following the 2006 campaign but made just six starts for Los Angeles in 2007 before undergoing season-ending surgery. Saturday's scheduled start against the Grizzlies at Chukchansi Park will be his first game action since making four appearances for Class-A Inland Empire in May.

Additionally, the Grizzlies Community Fund will team up with the Junior Giants, a summer baseball league, run free of charge for children ages 5-18 living in inner cities and rural suburbs throughout Central and Northern California, Oregon and Nevada, for a glove drive on Saturday night as well. Grizzlies fans are encouraged to bring baseball gloves to donate to the cause, and anyone who does donate a glove will receive a special San Francisco Giants' 50th Anniversary commemorative pin.

More than 13,000 youth participate in the Junior Giants program each year in over 70 leagues serving over 150 cities. The Giants Community Fund provides jerseys, hats, baseball equipment necessary to run a league. The Fund provides tickets to select Giants games for the youth to attend a game.

In recognition of the new California law prohibiting drivers from using cell phones with a hands-free device, which goes into effect on July 1st, Saturday night at Chukchansi Park is "Hands-Free Night". The first 2,500 fans into the Park will receive a Grizzlies' Duffel Bag (a hands-free device!) thanks to California Transplant Donor Network. On-field events for the night will include hands-free contests like bobbing for apples.

Any Grizzlies' fan that arrives at the Chukchansi Park box office wearing a hands-free cell phone device will be able to take advantage of a 2-for-1 Field Level Reserved ticket offer. However, in order to prepare people for the consequences associated with the newest California traffic law, fans that arrive at the box office while talking on their cell phones without using a hands-free device will be charged double for their tickets.

Following a series opening win over Las Vegas on Thursday night, the Grizzlies continue their four-game series with the Triple-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Dodgers on Orange-Out Friday at Chukchansi Park.
