Sevierville, Tennessee -- The Tennessee Smokies Professional Baseball Club, the Class AA Southern League Affiliate of the Chicago Cubs, have added infielder Ben Broussard to the active roster. In a related roster move, the Smokies placed INF Matt Craig on the disabled list due to a strained back.

Broussard joins the Smokies after being signed by the Chicago Cubs yesterday. Broussard brings Major League experience to the Smokies infield, after playing at the big league level with the Cleveland Indians, Seattle Mariners, and Texas Rangers over the past seven years. He began the 2008 campaign with the Rangers, accumulating a .159 batting average over 26 games while hitting three home runs and driving in eight. Broussard was released by the Rangers and latched on with the Yankees, where he hit .326 with one home run and six RBI for Class AAA Scranton Wilkes Barre, where he was recently released.

The 31-year-old is a native of Austin, TX. Broussard played in the Southern League with the Chattnooga Lookouts from 1999-2001, and is in his 9th season of professional baseball. He was selected in the second round of the 1999 draft by the Cincinnati Reds, then was traded to the Cleveland Indians in the 2002 season.

Tennessee continues their 5-game series against the Montgomery Biscuits on the road Friday night. The Smokies will return home after a five-game set in Montgomery on Tuesday May 20th against the Mississippi Braves at 7:15 PM.
