Mississippi Braves News Release
Todd Redmond turned in his eighth quality start of the season and the M-Braves turned his start into their second straight win over the Smokies. The M-Braves missed golden opportunities to blow the game wide open, but with the strong pitching of Redmond, Nelson Payano and Brad Nelson, they got all of the offense they'd need.
Tennessee took their first lead of the series with an unearned run in the top of the third. Wellington Castillo led off with a double, but he should've been out at third one batter later. Pitcher Tanner Watson's sacrifice-bunt bounced right to Van Pope who whirled and threw to Javier Guzman covering third. Guzman had Castillo out by a few steps, but he dropped a good throw from Pope. Castillo came in to score on Sam Fuld's sacrifice fly to left giving the visiting-Smokies a 1-0 lead.
Todd Redmond and the M-Braves got that run, plus one, back in the home half of the inning. Redmond led off with a walk and he moved to second on a wild pitch. After Jordan Schafer singled to right, runners were at the corners for JC Holt. Holt doubled to center plating both Redmond and Schafer to give the M-Braves a 2-1 lead. Mississippi went on to load the bases before getting an out, but they couldn't capitalize on the golden opportunity. After three, Mississippi led 2-1.
Mississippi loaded the bases with no outs again in the fourth. Javier Guzman led off with a bunt-single and Jose Camarena followed with a single to center. Todd Redmond's sac-bunt was misplayed by Watson allowing him to reach safely to load the bases. Once again they got nothing out of it as the Smokies got a strikeout and a double play to get out of a jam for the second straight inning.
The M-Braves did get another run in the sixth. With two outs in the inning, Redmond drew his second walk of the night and Jordan Schafer followed with a base on balls. JC Holt then ripped a single up the middle plating Redmond with the Braves third run. Heading to the seventh, Mississippi led 3-1.
Jose Camarena's two-RBI double in the seventh gave Mississippi a 5-1 lead. Greg Creek got the rally started with a single to right and Pope followed with a double. With two outs in the inning, Camarena blasted a double off of the right-centerfield wall that plated both Creek and Pope with the M-Braves fourth and fifth runs.
Redmond improved to 7-2 on the year after allowing one unearned run on four hits while striking out eight batters through seven innings. Nelson Payano threw 1.2 scoreless innings and Brad Nelson finished out the game by inducing a groundout in his one-third of an inning.
Watson gave up two runs on six hits through four innings of work. He worked into and out of jams in the third and fourth to leave the game trailing only 2-1, but he still fell to 1-3 on the year. Jesse Estrada came on and gave up a run in two innings and Greg Reinhard allowed two runs in two innings.
The Braves and Smokies will play game three of this five-game set Friday night at Trustmark Park at 7:05 ct. Tommy Hanson will take the hill for Mississippi while Jeff Samardzija will get the call for Tennessee.
The Incredible Hulk and Spider-Man will entertain fans during the game and the always-spectacular Friday Night Fireworks Extravaganza will wow Braves' fans after the game Friday night at Trustmark Park.
Tomahawk Chops:
Redmond notched his eighth quality start of the year ... Mississippi has now won seven of his eight quality outings. JC Holt went 2-5 with a double and three RBI. Reid Gorecki went 3-4 in the game. Jose Camarena went 2-4 with two RBI.
