Hagerstown Suns News Release
KANNAPOLIS, NC - A big second inning helped the Hagerstown Suns (26-23) beat the Kannapolis Intimidators (23-27) 11-7 on Sunday, May 25th.
The Suns sent 11 batters to the plate in the second inning, scoring seven runs on three hits and four walks. Right fielder Michael Burgess led off the second with a triple to right field and was driven in on a single by second baseman Jake Smolinski before Kannapolis starting pitcher Gregory Infante walked four consecutive Suns and was eventually removed from the game.
Infante (0-1) lasted just one and one third innings, allowed seven runs and walked six in taking the loss.
Hagerstown added another run in the top of the third on back-to-back hits by Smolinski and designated hitter Tim Pahuta before the Intimidators struck for five of their own in the home half of the third inning.
Base hits by shortstop Dan Lyons, first baseman Bill Rhinehart and left fielder Aaron Seuss led to two more runs in the top of the fifth inning to put the game out of reach for the Suns who would add their 11th run of the game in the top of the eighth inning.
Cole Kimball struggled as the starting pitcher for the Suns, but Erik Arnesen and Chris Lugo were excellent in relief.
Arnesen (4-0) picked up the win by pitching three and one third innings and allowing just one earned on a solo homer to right field by Kannapolis catcher John Curtis. Lugo earned his first save of the season by pitching the last three innings and allowing just one earned run.
The Suns and Intimidators will play game three of their four-game series on Monday, May 25, at 2:05 P.M. After the series, the Suns will return to Hagerstown to take on the Delmarva Shorebirds for four games starting on Wednesday, May 28th at 6:35 P.M.
