Tulsa Drillers News Release
The Tulsa Drillers did something Sunday afternoon they have been unable to do all season long, win their third straight game. The Drillers broke open a close contest with a five-run seventh inning and posted a 9-5 victory over the Springfield Cardinals.
While the Drillers reached a season high with their third consecutive win, the loss for the Cardinals was their tenth straight.
All 14 runs in the game were scored after the fourth inning. The Drillers broke a scoreless tie in the top of the fifth when Chris Nelson's two-out single scored Daniel Carte, who had also singled.
Springfield tied the game in the bottom of the fifth on Allen Craig's 10th home run of the season. It was the fourth straight game that Craig has homered. In those four games, he is 10-18 (.556) with seven runs batted in.
Tony Blanco put the Drillers back in front when he answered with a solo home run in the top of the sixth. Blanco has now homered in three striaght games, and he has hit five in his last seven games. He has nine runs batted in during those three games.
All five of Tulsa's runs in its big seventh inning scored with two outs. With the bases loaded, Matt Miller plated Justin Nelson with an infield single that increased the lead to 3-1. An error by Springfield third baseman Casey Rowlett on a groundball by Blanco brought home another run and kept the inning alive. The error proved costly when Jeff Kindel followed with a bases-clearing double that gave the Drillers a 7-1 lead.
Kindel collected two more RBIs in the ninth inning with a two-run single. The first baseman finished the day 3-5 with 5 runs batted in.
Springfield made the final score 9-5 with a four-run ninth inning off Luis Gonzalez.
Tulsa starting pitcher Ching-Lung Lo (2-6) picked up his second win of the year. He allowed one run on four hits in five innings of work. Adam Bright worked two hitless relief innings to lower his season ERA to 1.16.
The Drillers will go for a series sweep of the Redbirds Monday night at Hammons Field. Xavier Cedeno (3-3, 5.09 ERA) will pitch for Tulsa against Clayton Mortensen (1-3, 4.87 ERA) of Springfield with first pitch slated for 7:10PM.
