Washington, PA - The Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Federal Savings Bank, signed a shortstop, according to officials.

Jeff Beachum was acquired from the Winnipeg Goldeyes of the Northern League for a player to be named. Beachum returns to the game following a year away after playing for with four teams in the New York Yankees minor league system in 2006. He signed with the Yankees as a free agent in 2006 following four years at Middle Tennessee State University. He was assigned to Staten Island of the New York Penn League where he had two hits and drove in a run in his professional debut on 06/22/06 against Brooklyn. He appeared in a total of 37 games with two doubles, one triple, one homerun, and 11 RBI, in 104 at-bats between Staten Island (NYP), Charleston (SC) of the South Atlantic League, Tampa of the Florida State League, and the Gulf Coast Yankees.

The Cordova, TN native was a four year starter at shortstop and a three time all-conference performer, while leading Middle Tennessee State to four straight Sun Belt Tournament championship games during his career playing in 225 career games and collecting a school and a Sun Belt Conference record 323 career hits. He holds school records in runs scored (179), at-bats (935) and singles (253), and is tied for first in total bases (415). He ended his career second in career doubles (57), second in games played and sixth in RBIs (138). During his senior season he set a single-season mark for hits in 2006 with 98, posting the sixth-best batting average in a season at .395. He scored 62 runs this season with 76 singles in 248 at-bats and struck out just 14 times all year.

"Jeff is a talented player, and we think he has the chance to make a big impact on this team," said Ross Vecchio, the Wild Things' General Manager. "He is someone we were interested in last season, but he decided not to play. When we had the opportunity to acquire his contract from Winnipeg, we jumped at the chance!"

The Wild Things begin their season with a special game against the U.S. Military All Stars this Thursday night, and they play three exhibition games against the Chillicothe Paints on Friday and Saturday. The Washington Home Opener is set for May 24th.
