Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WILMINGTON, DE - For the second consecutive game, an inept Warthogs offense and mental mistakes proved costly as Winston-Salem fell to Wilmington 4-1 on Saturday night at Frawley Stadium. The Warthogs (9-9) left 12 guys on base, including six in scoring position aiding the Blue Rocks in taking the second game of this three-game series with a potential sweep looming tomorrow afternoon.
The Blue Rocks (9-12) manufactured a run in the first inning to take an early 1-0 lead. Derrick Robinson reached on a bunt single, stole second base and moved to third on a ground out. After a pitch hit Joe Dickerson to put runners on the corners, Wilmington executed a double steal with Robinson crossing the plate for the game's first run.
Wilmington mounted a two-out rally in the fifth inning off Warthogs starting pitcher Aaron Poreda. Robinson lifted an RBI double inside the right field line to score Josh Johnson, who was running on the pitch. Chris McConnell followed with an RBI single that plated Robinson and gave the Blue Rocks a 3-0 lead.
An inside-the-park home run by C.J. Retherford finally put Winston-Salem on the board in the sixth inning. Retherford lifted a fly ball that Blue Rocks left fielder Anthony Seratelli could not locate off the bat. The ball landed in the left field corner and Retherford, who was hustling out of the box, crossed the plate as the relay throw deflected of his shoulder. It was Retherford's third straight game with a home run and it was the first ever inside-the-park home run allowed by Wilmington.
A Winston-Salem mistake allowed a Blue Rocks run to score in the eighth inning as right fielder Salvador Sanchez misplayed a soft fly ball with two outs and a runner on third to bring the final run across for Wilmington.
Blue Rocks starting pitcher Mario Santiago, who entered the game 0-2 with a 7.71 ERA and opponents hitting .428 against him, tossed a season-high 5 1/3 innings and limited the Warthogs to one run on five hits with four strikeouts. Tyler Chambliss recorded the final three outs for Wilmington to collect his fourth save of the season.
Poreda worked a season-high six innings for Winston-Salem, but suffered the loss after allowing three runs on six hits with three strikeouts. Warthog's infielder Javier Colina finished 0-for-4 to snap his Carolina League best 15-game hitting streak.
These same two clubs conclude their three-game series on Sunday afternoon at Frawley Stadium. Winston-Salem will start RHP Jacob Rasner (2-0, 1.00) and Wilmington will turn to LHP Everett Teaford (1-0, 1.04). First pitch is scheduled for 1:35 PM.
