Salem RidgeYaks News Release

Salem, VA-The Salem Avalanche, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Houston Astros, used a four-run eighth inning to zoom past the Potomac Nationals Saturday night 5-4 on Lewis-Gale Medical Center Field at Salem Memorial Baseball Stadium. The first Salem (2-0) lead over Potomac (0-2) came after the eight-batter eighth inning.

Leading 4-1, the Nationals sent last year's closer Adam Carr to the mound in the eighth. He hit Cesar Quintero with a 1-1 pitch then surrendered a double to Tim Torres. Next, James Van Ostrand lifted a ball to center that fell behind Frank Diaz for an RBI double. The following batter, Jordan Parraz, reached on a fielding error by second baseman Matt Rogelstad. Next, Orlando Rosales smacked an RBI single to right to tie the game. The sixth batter of the inning, Justin Tellam, walked to load the bases and simultaneously end Carr's night. A Koby Clemens sacrifice fly against Josh Wilkie pushed Salem into the lead.

In the ninth, Raymar Diaz surrendered a double to leadoff man Edgardo Baez. But, catcher Justin Tellam picked Baez off of second with Seth Bynum at the plate. Diaz subdued Bynum and Brian Peacock to finish the game.

Potomac led 3-0 after a two-run second and another run in the fourth on an RBI groundout by Matt Rogelstad. Salem's lone run prior to the eighth came across on a double by Jordan Parraz. It was the first RBI of the center fielder's Advanced-A career.

Diaz earned the win with a scoreless inning and a third while Carr was saddled with his first loss of the season. Carr lost just once in 41 appearances with Potomac last year.

Salem aims for the series sweep Sunday at 2:07 PM as lefty Douglas Arguello faces Potomac's Ross Detwiler.
