Omaha Storm Chasers News Release

OMAHA, NE - The Omaha Royals today kicked off the second annual "Hit the Books" program, presented by the Nebraska College Savings Program and designed to encourage students to read books. In 2008, almost 13,000 school children in 33 elementary schools in the Omaha metro and surrounding area have signed up for the program, which is still open for more kids to participate.

The program began a few months ago, with a bookmark design contest. The Royals received more than 5,000 bookmark designs from elementary school kids and today eleven-year old Jake Kennedy of St. Cecilia Elementary School learned that his bookmark design was chosen as the winner. Lesley Crutcher, Royals Director of Community Relations and Casey, the team's mascot, surprised Jake and his class today with free pizza. Jake also received a gift bag including an Alex Gordon bobble head, an Omaha Royals jersey and other prizes.

Every student participating in the program will receive Jake's bookmark. They will each be required to read four books and, as they finish reading books, their teacher will mark each of four bases on their bookmark until the student reaches home plate, completing the program.

The students have until Thursday, April 3rd to finish the reading program. They will then be able to bring their bookmarks to Rosenblatt Stadium to redeem them for two free General Admission tickets to one of three Royals games: Sunday, April 6th at 1:35 p.m. vs. Albuquerque; Monday, April 7th at 6:35 p.m. vs. Round Rock; or Tuesday, May 6th at 6:35 p.m. vs. Portland.

As the winning bookmark designer, Jake will receive the Royal treatment with a VIP package of prizes and get to throw out a ceremonial first pitch at the April 6th game.

For those interested in signing up for the program, call Lesley Crutcher at (402) 738-5109.

The Royals 2008 season opener is set for Rosenblatt Stadium on Thursday, April 3rd at 7:05 p.m. vs. the Albuquerque Isotopes. Season tickets, mini-plans and other ticket packages for the team's 2008 season are currently on sale, with single-game tickets to go on sale at a later date to be announced. For tickets or more information, contact the Royals ticket office at (402) 738-5100.
