Cavs select former ORU standout Caleb Green as first pickSeptember 26, 2007 - Continental Basketball Association 1 (CBA 1) - Lawton-Fort Sill Cavalry
Oklahoma Cavalry had the first pick in all six rounds of the draft and were fortunate to get the top six selections they originally wanted said President/General Manager Otis Birdsong.
"We had our top six players on the board, and we got every player that we wanted," Birdsong said. "I was very pleased with the draft, and hope to get those players in here that can help us win a championship."
Green will not only bring his athleticism as a power forward to the team, but also a local name that many people in the area will know.
"Caleb is a great player, and it is nice that he is from Oklahoma," Coach Richardson said. "He had great stats in college, and I think he will be a great professional basketball player."
Green was named a Mid-Major All-American for three straight seasons while at ORU, and was also the Player of the Year in the Mid-Continent Conference for three straight years. He finished his career as the Mid-Major Player of the Year and career leader for the conference with 2,503 points and 1,189 rebounds. He also etched his name in NCAA history as the 18th player to reach the 2,500 point mark and 1,000 rebound mark.
Rounding out the final five selections for the Cavs were 6-foot-8, 230-pound Forward Rashad Jones-Jennings from Arkansas-Little Rock, 6-foot-5, 220-pound Guard De'Angelo Alexander from Charlotte, 6-foot-9, 255-pound Forward Rashaun Freeman from UMass, 6-foot-8, 216-pound Forward Demetris Nichols from Syracuse and 6-foot-7, 252-pound Forward Carl Landry from Purdue.
De'Angelo Alexander is from Midwest City, Okla. and played a stint at the University of Oklahoma before transferring to Charlotte. He will be another great addition to the team, as he is ranked among the best wing forwards in the country and is an excellent shooter.
All but one of the Cavs' picks were forwards. Going into most drafts teams are looking for size, and that was the Cavs' philosophy also Birdsong said.
"For me, if you get a good big man and a good guard, you're going to be successful," Birdsong stated.
Nothing less than success is what the Cavs plan on achieving, and in the process Birdsong and Coach Richardson hope to mold their players into exceptional athletes on and off the court and help them reach their goals.
"The advantage Michael Ray and I have is that we are both four-time NBA All-Stars," Birdsong said. "We know what it takes to get to the NBA and for a majority of these guys, that's their dream."
