Ortegano and Company Two-Hit Greeneville

Danville Otterbots News Release

DANVILLE, VA - Jose Ortegano combined with William Ramirez and Nick Fellman for a two-hit 4-1 victory over the Greeneville Astros at American Legion Post 325 Field at Dan Daniel Memorial Park tonight.

Jose Oregano (6-1) ran his win total to six and is now tied for the team-high with Jeff Locke, who is also 6-1. He went six innings and allowed both Greeneville hits while walking two and fanning five.

Ramirez started the seventh and went two and a third innings without a hit, but he did walk four and his batter came around for an unearned run in the ninth. After his second walk of the ninth, Braves manager Paul Runge brought Nick Fellman in with two runners on. It was a save situation since the tying run was on deck, so Fellman tied the D-Braves record of 16 saves that Fernando Tadefa set in 2002.

The two-hit showing was the third of the year, with the other two coming on July 14 in an 11-2 win over these same Astros and on July 25 in a 1-0 victory versus Burlington. Ortegano started and won the July 14 game while going six hitless innings. The no-hit bid ended in the eighth that evening, but it ended in the fourth tonight.

The Braves offense was having the same problems as Greeneville's until starter David Dinelli (0-2) left. It was 1-0 when Brian Wabick relieved him, but Danville hit Wabick up for three runs in the fifth.

Dinelli went four innings while allowing a run off two hits and three walks. He struck out eight. Wabick's three frames saw three runs due to four hits and a pair of free passes. He whiffed two, as did Agustin Pinales, who pitched a 1-2-3 eighth. Braves batters struck out 12 times tonight and have struck out 22 times the past two games.

The first run of the game came via Josh Morris single to left with two down in the first. The hit brought in Javier Dominguez, who had walked with one down and moved to second on a wild pitch. After a K, Morris collected his RBI and moved to second on an ensuing Adam Coe hit. They both moved into scoring position during another wild pitch, but the third strikeout of the frame left them stranded.

The blast that gave Danville some insurance runs came off Cody Johnson's bat in the fifth. After Wabick replaced Dinelli to begin the inning, Eliazar Carmona drew a leadoff walk and moved to second on a Cole Miles groundout to Albert Cartwright at second. After Dominguez flew out to right, Cody Johnson got a hold of a Wabick offering and hit a no-doubt blast to center. It was his league-leading 15th of the year and it sits one shy of the second-most D-Braves homers in a season, hit by Mark Jurich in 2004. Eric Campbell's 18 in 2005 is the team record. The shot was just his fifth at home.

Morris and Coe then recorded their second hits of the night with back-to-back doubles that scored Morris. Both went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI while Morris scored a run.

The shutout looked intact going into the ninth, but Ramirez allowed a one-out walk to Cartwright. Cartwright then stole second and advanced to third on Dominguez's throwing error during the play. Another walk brought in Fellman. The closer struck out the first man he faced before getting a grounder from Reinaldo Pestana. Coe couldn't field it cleanly at third as Cartwright came in. Fellman then recorded his record-tying save with a flyout.

The Braves are now 44-18 while Greeneville is 17-45.

The Braves have several upcoming promotions. August 24 is Sallie Mae and Dr. Donna Helton, DDS Back-2-School Night Backpack Giveaway for the first 1,000 fans. The 25th is InnKeeper Fan Appreciation Night, with a grab bag giveaway and fireworks. August 26 is the last Sunday home game of the season, so kids can run the bases after the game.
