Drive Homer their Way to Win

Greenville, SC - The GreenJackets (50-20, 34-26) could not complete the sweep of the Greenville Drive (29-40, 26-32) on Thursday night losing the final game of their seven game road trip, 5-3. Reliever Adam Ortiz suffered the loss and his first blown save as the Drive rallied back in the seventh inning for the win and connected for two home runs off of Ortiz.

With Augusta leading 2-0 in the bottom of the seventh inning Drive catcher Paul Smyth hit a three-run homer with one out in the frame to give Greenville a 3-2 lead. The Drive added another run in the half inning when Aaron Reza scored from third on a fielding error from second baseman Brad Boyer for a 4-2 advantage and Greenville sent all nine batters to the plate in the frame.

The Drive added another run in the eighth inning when Josh Reddick connected for a two-out solo homer to right-center field.

Ortiz (0-1) worked two innings and allowed five runs, four earned, on five hits while walking one and striking out one.

Augusta got one run back in the ninth inning on a two-out RBI single from Juan Jean scoring Barry Gunther from second base but that's all the GreenJackets would get. Augusta loaded the bases up in the ninth inning, however closer Josh Papelbon came in to record the final out and got Boyer to ground out to second to end the game.

Augusta broke a scoreless tie in the sixth inning with the GreenJackets connected for three consecutive singles with two outs for a 2-0 lead. Ryan Rohlinger got it started with an infield RBI single scoring Jean from third base for a 1-0 lead. Bobby Felmy followed with a single then Brett Pill drove home Rohlinger with an RBI single up the middle.

Augusta starter Clayton Tanner recorded the no-decision in 5.1 innings shutout innings and allowing four hits, five walks and striking out four.

The GreenJackets open up their final regular season home stand on Friday night against the Asheville Tourists and once again the Tourists come to town looking for a playoff spot. The last time Asheville came to town was June 11 for a three game series and Augusta swept the Tourists to clinch the Southern Division first-half title and eliminated Asheville. Augusta will send lefty Ben Snyder (14-5, 2.12) to the hill in first game of the series while Asheville will counter with right-hander Josh Sullivan (3-1, 3.32). First pitch is at 7:05 p.m.
