
Mullen Named RoughRiders' Assistant Coach

Cedar Rapids, Iowa- Mark Mullen has been named the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders' new assistant coach, the RoughRiders announced today. Mullen, a former Boston University standout, spent the last two seasons as an assistant coach at Andover (Massachusetts) High School.
"I'm happy to welcome Mark Mullen to the RoughRiders' organization," said RoughRiders Coach and General Manager Mark Carlson. "He is a quality person who was a team captain and a very good player in a great program at Boston University. He's a proven winner who's been to NCAA tournaments and won Beanpots. He will be very valuable to all of our players here in Cedar Rapids. I look forward to working with him."
Mullen skated in 149 games over four seasons at B.U., scoring 29 goals and totaling 70 points while helping the Terriers to three NCAA tournament berths. The Dorchester, Massachusetts, native served as team captain as a senior in 2003-04 after being named Best Defensive Forward in both Hockey East and all of New England college hockey as a junior. Mullen was also a member of B.U. teams that won Boston's prestigious Beanpot tournament in both 2002 and 2003.
Mullen spent the 2004-05 season with the ECHL's Pee Dee Pride before retiring as a player. He scored 11 goals and collected 27 points in 51 games in his lone professional campaign.
Mullen is returning to the USHL for the first time since playing for the Des Moines Buccaneers in 1999-2000. He scored ten goals and picked up 26 points in 58 games with the Bucs.
Mullen replaces Joe Exter, who has been named the goaltending coach for the U.S.N.T.D.P. in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Exter spent one season behind the RoughRiders bench.
"I enjoyed working with Joe and we appreciate all of his efforts and contributions during his time here," said Carlson. "We wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors."
The RoughRiders will open their ninth season on Friday, October 5 against the Chicago Steel in Bensenville, Illinois. The Riders will open at home one night later against the Indiana Ice. 2007-08 season tickets are currently available through the RoughRiders' business office (319-247-0340). Fans who pay for season tickets in full before August 15 will receive a significant discount in addition to a host of other benefits available exclusively to season ticket holders. Single game tickets will go on sale on a date to be determined in September.
