Portland Pirates News Release
PORTLAND, ME - Today twenty-four 9th and 10th grade students from Casco Bay High School formed Pirate Productions Inc. as part of the Junior Achievement of Maine's "Company Program". Last season, the Pirates, Casco Bay High School and Junior Achievement joined forces to present the Pirates game on January 27th against the Springfield Falcons that drew a crowd of 6,433 fans (6,733 capacity) and raised $5,000 for Casco Bay High School's (formerly Expeditionary Learning Outward Bound High School) library and technology needs which helped to provide students with lap tops this year. This year, the Junior Achievement's Company Program will continue to serve as the model around which the Pirates and the students from Casco Bay High School will generate to gain an understanding about running a business.
Pirates Productions Inc. has also created a logo, developed business plans and finalized a mission statement and vision for the game the students will present on Friday, January 26th, 2007 as the Portland Pirates host the Providence Bruins at 7:05 p.m. at the Cumberland County Civic Center. The program is presented by Maine Bank and Trust and the game on January 26th will be sponsored by UnumProvident, backed by a $2,500 donation to support the student's fundraising efforts. All tickets purchased from the students at Casco Bay High School for the game on January 26th will be $7.00. For every ticket purchased from a Casco Bay High School student or online at www.portlandpirates.com/CBHS, $2.00 will be donated towards Casco Bay High School's library and technology needs.
"It is great to be working with the Pirates again. Last year was great but we want to step up our efforts this year with our goal of being the "coolest" game all season. Another thing we really want to do with this game is make people more aware of the principles of Casco Bay High School, namely, our rigorous curriculum and developing personal and educational growth through an authentic environment. The students seem to really appreciate the opportunity to be part of this program, and build this relationship with the Pirates and Junior Achievement of Maine," said Pirates Productions Inc. President Dri Huber, who was elected to this position by her classmates.
Over the next two months, students will be working with the Portland Pirates front office staff to implement business plans for five divisions of Pirate Productions Inc., including communications, event planning, finance, marketing and ticket sales.
The culmination of the project will be on January 26th, 2007 when the students actually run the Pirates game against the Providence Bruins at the Cumberland County Civic Center.
Junior Achievement of Maine Inc., is a non profit, 501(c)(3) whose mission is to educate and inspire young people to value free enterprise, business and economics in order to improve the quality of their lives.
