Day inks pro contract

Brandon, Manitoba -- 21-year old defenceman Riley Day will soon be off to the professional hockey ranks, after signing a contract with the ECHL's Cincinnati Cyclones this week.

A four year Western Hockey League veteran, Day spent the past year and a half patrolling the blueline for the Brandon Wheat Kings and was instrumental in the team's Eastern Conference Championship in 2005.

A former WHL Champion - as a member of the Medicine Hat Tigers - Day finished his major junior hockey career with sixteen goals, 43 assists, 59 points and a total of 569 minutes in penalties.

During the 2005-06 campaign, the former midget AAA Wheat King had six goals, 25 points and 191 penalty minutes in 61 games. As well, he finished among the team leaders with a +9 ranking and capped off the year by being chosen the Wheat Kings' winne r of the Art Marshall Memorial Trophy that goes to the club's Top Graduating Player.

In addition to signing with the Cyclones, Day agreed to an American Hockey League tryout with the Hamilton Bulldogs.

Day has previous pro hockey training camp experience with both the Ottawa Senators and Carolina Hurricanes.

In other Wheat King news, there are still limited openings for this year's Brandon Wheat Kings' Hockey School that is set to get underway this weekend at the Keystone Centre. Among the instructors this year will be former captain Ryan Craig of the National Hockey League's Tampa Bay Lightning, Philadelphia Flyers' center Marty Murray as well as AHLers Tim Konsorada, Wade Skolney and Steven Later.
