
Battery welcomes Major League Soccer's FC Dallas in Cup

Charleston, SC. The Charleston Battery takes on Major League Soccer's FC Dallas in the fourth round of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup this Wednesday night at Blackbaud Stadium; kick off is set for 7:30 PM. At stake is a berth in the quarter-finals of US Soccer's National Championship. If the Battery defeats Dallas it will host the winner of the Houston Dynamo vs Carolina Dynamo match at Blackbaud on Wednesday, August 23.
Charleston advanced to the fourth round with wins over the Sonoma County Sol (1-0) and the Portland Timbers (3-1). Ben Hollingsworth has led the way so far with three goals in the competition; FC Dallas enters the game in this round.
Charleston has two players with previous Dallas connections; forward Gavin Glinton played for Dallas in 2003 & 2004; midfielder Lazo Alavanja played for Dallas from 1999 - 2001.
FC Dallas enters the game on a four-match winning streak; it's most recent game was a 4-1 victory versus the Colorado Rapids in a game played last Saturday night.
The Charleston Battery is 3-5 all-time in the US Open Cup versus MLS opposition. Most recently in 2004 the Battery defeated the MetroStars 1-0 in a fourth round fixture on the way to losing 0-1 versus the Chicago Fire in the semi-finals.
The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, the U.S. Soccer Federation's National Championship, is an annual competition open to all amateur and professional soccer teams affiliated with U.S. Soccer. It is the oldest annual team tournament in U.S. sports history and among the oldest soccer tournaments of its type in the world. In 1999, the competition was renamed to honor long-time soccer pioneer Lamar Hunt.
At stake in the tournament is $180,000 in prize money broken down as follows: $100,000 to the champion, $50,000 to the runner up and $10,000 to the team which advances deepest in the tournament from each of the Division II, Division III and amateur levels.
