SALT LAKE CITY (Monday, February 13, 2006) - Real Salt Lake played its third preseason match yesterday eventually falling 1-0 to the Columbus Crew in the Tom Fitzgerald Memorial Festival at Pepin Stadium on the University of Tampa campus in Tampa, Fla. Crew DF Chad Marshall tallied the lone goal of the match in the 55th minute.

"We were pleased with what we did offensively and defensively during the first half of the game. We created a few chances in beginning, middle and end of the first half. Defensively we played well in the first half," said RSL Head Coach John Ellinger. "In the second half we substituted our whole lineup and this provided us with a good opportunity to evaluate the performance of some our players against a starting unit."

RSL started the attack early as former Columbus Crew striker Jeff Cunningham made a run at Crew goalkeeper Jon Busch at the 10-minute mark, the offside flag was raised and the play was whistled dead. Five minutes later, Crew FW Jamal Sutton had a good look at the RSL goal, firing high from the top of the box.

Real ran right back down the field shortly thereafter and nearly scored off a header by MF Seth Trembly. He got on the end of a good cross and put his attempt on goal, but Busch made a diving save to his left to tip the ball away from the goal. In the 27th minute, MF Andy Williams earned a free kick just outside the top of the penalty area. Williams took the set piece, firing the shot straight into the defensive wall.

At the 39-minute mark, Williams picked up the ball from MF Kevin Novak down the right flank, but his right-footed shot was blocked before it could get anywhere near the goal. MF Chris Brown had a shot blocked out for a corner with about a minute to play in the first half with the half ending 0-0.

Real began the second half with a complete lineup change. Second half substitute and No. 2 overall selection in the 2006 MLS SuperDraft Mehdi Ballouchy had an opportunity within the first five minutes when he launched a shot from the top of the box, but Busch was able make an easy save.

In the 55th minute, the Columbus Crew tallied the games lone goal. Marshall came up out of the defense for a free kick. MF Jose Retiz took the free kick from the right flank and played the ball to the back post where it met Marshall who powered a header past RSL ‘keeper Noah Palmer. RSL had an opportunity in the final minutes, but the Crew defense cleared the ball from the line ending the game 1-0.
