Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release

Rocked By The Rock Cats A five-run seventh inning helped the New Britain Rock Cats put the game away, as they beat the Binghamton Mets 10-2 yesterday at New Britain Stadium. The B-Mets went on top in the first when Anderson Hernandez doubled and later scored on Jay Caligiuri's sacrifice fly. Hernandez was 2 for 5 with a pair of doubles, owning half of Binghamton's hits on the day. Joe Hietpas also homered in the ninth for the B-Mets, who split the four-game series and finished their seven-game road trip to Norwich and New Britain with a 4-3 record.

Road Warriors Binghamton's just-concluded 4-3 trip is their first winning road swing since they went 4-3 at Portland and New Hampshire April 18th-24th. The B-Mets split the final four games of their trip at New Britain and have earned a split in all three of their four-game series on the road this season (@ AKR, @ NH).

Hernandez To Triple A After his two-hit game yesterday, Hernandez was called up to AAA Norfolk, the fifth B-Met so honored this season, joining Tim Lavigne, Prentice Redman, Tim Hamulack and Chase Lambin. However, Lambin is returning to Binghamton to accommodate Hernandez's call-up, despite collecting hits in five of his six games and hitting .421 with the Tides.

It's How You Start... Ken Chenard, yesterday's starter for the B-Mets, had to leave the game after facing two batters, suffering a forearm strain. He was the only starter on the road trip not to last six innings. Overall, Binghamton's starting staff combined to allow six earned runs in 43 frames for a 1.26 ERA. However, it was a different story for the bullpen, which allowed 20 earned runs in 18 1/3 innings of work on the trip (9.82). The ‘pen was charged with runs in five of the six games in which they appeared.

On The Mound RHP Yusmeiro Petit (2-2, 2.74) Last Time Out: Sun. @ NOR (W): 6 IP, R, 4 H, 0 BB, 6 K (W 5-3)...Yusmeiro lasted more than five innings for the third time this season, throwing 67 pitches and no more than 15 in any inning. The righthander retired the first nine in a row and nine of the final 11 to face him, allowing his only run on a Daniel Ortmeier home run in the sixth. Yusmeiro left with the game tied 1-1, but a Mike Jacobs two-run home run in the top of the seventh got him the win. This Season: Yusmeiro, on a strict pitch count for most of the season, has allowed three earned runs or fewer in 10 of his 11 starts. The righthander missed nearly a month with shoulder soreness and to tend to his girlfriend in Venezuela, who had their first child. Today, Yusmeiro will make his third start since returning to the rotation. On Wednesday, the righthander was chosen to participate in the Futures Game for the second straight year.

Against Erie: Yusmeiro's first went five innings in a start against the SeaWolves at NYSEG Stadium on April 29th, allowing a run on two hits, walking none and striking out six, but getting a no-decision. The run came in the first, when David Espinosa led off the game with a home run. However, Petit retired the next 10 in a row and 15 of the last 16, leaving with a 1-1 tie. The B-Mets lost the game 5-1.

Background: The Maracaibo, Venezuela native is in his fourth season in the Mets organization after signing as a non-drafted free agent in November 2001. Last season, the righthander was 12-6 with a 2.20 ERA in 26 regular-season starts between Low-A Capital City, High-A St. Lucie and Binghamton, earning him recognition as the top pitching prospect in the Mets organization from Baseball America.
