Unbeaten Timbers feature home match at PGE Park Saturday

PORTLAND, Ore. - The Portland Timbers (3-0-2, 11pts) will play host to the Virginia Beach Mariners on Saturday, May 28, in their final home match before embarking on a four-game road swing. Saturday's action kicks off at 7 p.m. (Pacific) at PGE Park under a forecast of sunny and warm weather.
ARZATE RELEASED
Timbers midfielder Memo Arzate was released by the club this week. A second-year player out of UC-Santa Barbara, Arzate logged 62 minutes over five matches in Portland with one assist to his credit since 2004. Arzate, 23, is a native of Hawaiian Gardens, Calif.
TIMBERS VS. VIRGINIA BEACH - Saturday, May 28, 7 p.m.
The Virginia Beach (formally Hampton Roads) Mariners mark their second trip to PGE Park on Saturday ... the Mariners won the last match in Portland 3-2 (OT) in 2002 ... Virginia Beach plays the Timbers in the final contest of a three-game swing through Seattle, Vancouver and Portland ... English midfielder Darren Caskey paces the club with seven points (3g, 1a) thus far in 2005 ... goalkeeper Matthew Nelson has given up a league-high 14 goals this season ... the Mariners will have played 11 matches by Saturday, the most in the USL First Division.
CATCH IT WHILE YOU CAN
The Timbers last played at PGE Park on May 12 and following Saturday's match, won't return until June 16. With the Virginia Beach game representing the lone match at PGE Park in more than a month, the Timbers next head out on a four-game road trip to Rochester, Toronto, Puerto Rico and Vancouver.
GOING AT IT
A roster stocked with talent at every position tends to create a degree of competitiveness in training for most teams, and the Timbers are certainly no exception. The club has had a very strong week of training, seemingly taking out their lack of game time on the practice pitch at PGE Park. Said head coach Bobby Howe: "It's reaching a point where we need to take out our competitiveness on the opponent, instead of against each other. It's been too long of a break and we're ready for a game."
SATURDAY'S PROMOTION
The first 1,000 entrants to Saturday night's match will receive Portland Timbers wristbands, similar to the "Live Strong" bracelets worn by Lance Armstrong.
ALL IN THE FAMILY
With last week's signing of Paul Conway, the all-time leading scorer at Charleston, is reunited with his father, Timbers assistant coach Jimmy Conway. The elder Conway played three seasons in Portland from 1978-80 before settling his family in the Rose City, where the younger Conway grew up playing for FC Portland and Jesuit High School.
