Randy Maxwell Named Salmon Kings Director of Hockey Operations

October 8, 2004 - ECHL (ECHL)
Victoria Salmon Kings News Release

The Maxwell clan has been heavily involved in sports for decades beginning in Lethbridge, ALTA and continuing across most of North America. Patriarch of the Maxwell family, Stan, played professional hockey in the AHL and other pro leagues, including a stop in Victoria, BC. Stan was also a baseball player of some renown, playing professional fastball in North Bay, ON.

Stan’s children, including Victoria Salmon Kings Coach and General Manager Bryan Maxwell, have spent their entire lives walking in his footsteps. Eldest son Randy Maxwell was drafted by the Pittsburgh Penguins; 2nd son Marty was drafted by the Minnesota Twins and played 10 years of pro ball; 4th son Greg, a criminal lawyer boasts a 3 handicap; 5th son Brent played fastball at the University of Lethbridge and 6th son Scott was drafted by the Blue Jays and played baseball for Team Canada at the ’84 Olympics. The lone daughter, Lori, was also a fine athlete in her own right competing in most every sport she could get involved in.

With all of this sporting history going for them it just makes sense that members of this sports dynasty would one day end up working together. That day began over a dozen years ago when Bryan, then Coach and General Manager of the Spokane Chiefs, first tapped Randy to help out as Assistant General Manager. Randy and Bryan continued this partnership through five years in ‘the Spoke’ followed by another five years in Lethbridge.

Today Bryan is proud to announce Randy Maxwell as Director of Hockey Operations. “Randy not only brings experience to this job he also brings heart. Randy lives and breathes hockey and he is as much responsible for my success as anyone,” says Bryan. “It’s great to have someone you know so well in a position this valuable,” he added.

As Director of Hockey Operations Randy is responsible for knowing every scout, every General Manager and every agent that works in the hockey business. “This job is as much about who you know as what you know. I have a contact book that is as thick as many small town phone books and I work it every day,” said big brother Randy.

Randy will continue to spend most of his time in Lethbridge where he is a Captain in the fire department but will make periodic visits to Victoria and accompany the odd road trip. “My real strength is working the phones and getting out to as many junior games as possible. With the number of games I can get to from Lethbridge it might be the best place in the world to be an evaluator of hockey talent,” said Randy.

The Victoria Salmon Kings play their first regular season game October 22, 2004 against the Bakersfield Condors. They open their home schedule after an extended 14 game road trip on December 5, 2004 against those same Bakersfield Condors.
