ABA realigns divisions
September 9, 2004 - American Basketball Association (ABA) News Release
Indianapolis, IN. Joe Newman, ABA Co-Founder, today announced that the professional basketball league scheduled to begin in November has made a major realignment to its divisions. According to Newman, "Instead of having six divisions, we have pared it down to three divisions. We think it makes more sense and will please the fans."
Ricardo Richardson, ABA EVP, added, "It was my responsibility to put together the schedule. With six divisions, we had teams playing each other too many times - and fans would not get a chance to see many of the ABA teams. By combining the two east, two central and two west divisions into one of each - called the Red, White and Blue divisions - we were able to create a much better and more interesting schedule. And it is a more flexible schedule with more weekend games."
The divisions are as follows:
Red (West): Portland, Utah, Calgary, Bellevue, Long Beach, Tijuana, Los Angeles, Ontario, Orange County, Fresno, Vancouver, Colorado Springs and Las Vegas.
White (Central): Chicago, St. Louis, Arkansas, Detroit, Kentucky, Cincinnati, Fort Worth, Oklahoma City, Hermosillo, Juarez, Albuquerque and Kansas City.
Blue: (East): Boston, Harlem, New Jersey, Maryland, Pittsburgh, Jacksonville, Gwinnett, Atlanta, Nashville, Carolina, Philadelphia, Mississippi.
Richardson concluded, "Our goal is to have the published home and away schedule as early as Monday. While season ticket sales have been going well in most cities, we feel that there will be a real bump when the final schedule is published. The teams are signing great players - and it should be a fabulous season - and an affordable one for all."
