Reading's Howard Is Chase Monthly MVP For June
The Chase Bank has named Reading Phillies first baseman Ryan Howard as the Eastern League's Chase Most Valuable Player for the month of June. Howard, a 24-year old native of Wildwood, Missouri, was a unanimous selection for the award after hitting .386 with 10 doubles, 15 home runs, 43 RBI, 28 runs scored, 11 walks, a .458 on-base percentage and a .868 slugging percentage in 30 games for the R-Phils in June. The 6'4", 230 lb. slugger has blasted a league-best 33 home runs and driven in a league-high 87 runs in 81 games this season.
The 2003 Florida State League MVP is also currently leading the league in slugging percentage (.705), runs scored (63) and extra-base hits (51). Howard's 33 homers this season ties him with Greg Luzinski for the Reading Phillies single-season home run record, which Luzinski set for the R-Phils in 1970. Ryan, who was named the Eastern League Player of the Week for the weeks ending June 13th and June 27th, was selected by the Philadelphia Phillies out of Southwest Missouri State University in the fifth round of the June 2001 draft.
Howard will receive his award later this month in an on-field presentation at First Energy Stadium in Reading, Pennsylvania and he will also be recognized at the Chase MVP Awards banquet when the season ending award winners are announced.
Now in its eighth season, the Chase Awards Program is designed to recognize the monthly achievements and season long accomplishments of Eastern League players. Chase and the Eastern League will name a monthly most valuable player throughout the season, as well as a season ending Chase Eastern League MVP. In addition, Chase will select a Chase Pitcher of the Year, Chase Rookie of the Year and a Chase Manager of the Year at the end of the season. All award winners are chosen by Eastern League sports writers and radio announcers and will be recognized at a season ending awards banquet.

Fisher Cats Mascot Has A Name
The New Hampshire Fisher Cats have announced the name of their newest player. Prior to Friday night's contest with the Harrisburg Senators the Fisher Cats welcomed their mascot by his new name. Fungo was welcomed with roaring applause but this time fans and teammates now know what to call him.
The name Fungo was submitted by numerous fan suggestions at Gill Stadium during the period of June 18-25 of and was ultimately declared the winner on July 9, 2004, as a result of the team's website voting which took place from June 28-July 8, 2004. The Fisher Cats are very excited about the creative name that the fans have chosen. The name Fungo has dual symbolism. In a baseball context, the word Fungo is the name of the type of bat that is used to hit baseballs to players during team practices. Another interesting quality of the name is that it has the word "fun" in it. After all, "where ever the fun goes, he will go!"
The 5 names that were apart of the final stage of
the contest were as follows:
1. Fungo
2. Klawz
3. Fletch
4. Fisky
5. Trackz
