Zombo And Furlong Make College Commitments

March 30, 2010 - United States Hockey League (USHL) - Sioux Falls Stampede News Release

Sioux Falls, SD-The Sioux Falls Stampede announced today that defenseman Dan Furlong has committed to play collegiate hockey at the University of Massachusetts-Lowell while forward Dominic Zombo has committed to the University of Nebraska at Omaha. They become the 16th and 17th Stampede players to commit to a Division I program this season.

Furlong is in his second season with the Stampede and is currently second amongst Stampede defenseman in scoring with 19 points. He leads all Herd defenseman in goals scored with nine. Seven of his nine goals have come on the powerplay, second best on the club.

The Malden, MA native posted seven assists in 41 games last season for the Herd. Furlong was a first round draft pick of the Stampede during the 2007 USHL "Futures Draft."

He becomes the third current Stampede player to commit to UMass-Lowell. Josh Holmstrom and Chad Ruhwedel announced earlier this year that they will attend UMass-Lowell and play for the River Hawks this fall.

UMass-Lowell is located in Lowell, Massachusetts and are members of the Hockey East Conference. Former Stampede captain Ben Holmstrom just completed his four year collegiate career at Lowell before signing with the NHL's Philadelphia Flyers.

Zombo is in his first season with the Stampede and has recorded 21 points (11g, 10a) and is a plus-4 in 49 games this season. Zombo was a fifth round draft pick of the Herd's during the 2008 USHL "Futures Draft." His father, Rick, was the first ever USHL player to be drafted by an NHL club (Detroit).

The Ballwin, MO native has tallied three game-winning goals and three powerplay goals this season. Zombo spent last season with the St. Louis Jr. Blues of the Central States Hockey League (CSHL) posting 34 points (11g, 23a) in 45 games.

The University of Nebraska-Omaha is coming off a 20-16-6 season and a 6th place finish in the CCHA. The Mavericks are coached by former Fargo Force head coach Dean Blais and will be members of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) starting next season. Former Herd forward Terry Broadhurst just completed his freshman year with the Mavericks.

The Stampede return to the ice tomorrow night (Wednesday) when they host the Des Moines Buccaneers at 7:05 PM. It's also $1 hot dog night! The Herd will close out the home part of their regular season schedule on Friday at 7:05 PM against the Lincoln Stars. Friday is also Sioux Falls Ford "Take My Jersey Night." 23 game-worn jerseys will be raffled off after the game to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
