New Orleans Baby Cakes News Release
The New Orleans Zephyrs got off to a slow start in their spring training opener on Thursday, ultimately falling 7-3 to the Las Vegas 51s in Jupiter, Fla.
In the first Grapefruit League contest of the spring, the 51s jumped on Zephyrs starter Jo-Jo Reyes for three first-inning runs.
The Z's got two runs back in the bottom of the frame on a line drive home run to left by Kenny Wilson. Known more for his speed, Wilson set a career high with eight homers for Double-A Jacksonville and also swiped 37 bases, tied for second-most in the Southern League.
Las Vegas extended its lead in the third inning, nicking Matt Tomshaw for a pair of runs on three hits to cut his outing short.
Again, the Zephyrs responded with a run in their half of the inning with Zach Lutz knocking in a run against his former club. Lutz's single was one of nine by the Zephyrs on the afternoon.
Brady Shoemaker, who ranked second on the Z's in home runs and RBI last season, reached base three times on a single and two walks while serving as the designated hitter.
The Zephyrs continue their spring training schedule on Friday afternoon against the Memphis Redbirds.
