Portland Lumberjax News Release
PORTLAND, Oct. 17, 2006 - Tomorrow evening from 4:30 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., Jax Managing Partner Angela Batinovich will take part in the YWCA (Young Women's Christian Association) of Greater Portland's Third Annual Art of Surviving Opening & Preview in their downtown offices at 1111 SW 10th Avenue (third floor). As a board member on the YWCA, Batinovich is dedicated to promoting the organization and will be on site to support the art work created by individuals who have been affected by domestic violence and sexual assault.
This event showcases art work created by adult and children survivors, family members, therapist and human services staff. The YWCA believes that visual art provides a powerful channel for people to express their pain and personal turmoil through crises and that their artwork celebrates the healing process. Their expressions visually display stories that the survivors most often times can not put into words.
The organization is holding free events for the public throughout their "YWCA Week Without Violence" which runs through Sunday, Oct. 22. They kick off their festivities with the art exhibition tomorrow (Wednesday, Oct. 18) from 4:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. The art exhibit will be open to the public until Monday, Oct. 30. During the showcase, Helen Chan, an internationally recognized jewelry and accessory designer, will sell her pieces below retail prices for tomorrow night only. She will donate 25 percent of all proceeds to the YWCA of Greater Portland. They will also host a luncheon called "Breaking the Silence...Domestic Violence in Communities of Color" at noon on Friday, Oct. 20. Speakers will focus on domestic violence in the community and how to build awareness, help provide for family safety and assess current systemic resources. Admission to the luncheon is free, but registration is required.
For more than 26 years, the YWCA of Greater Portland has been an advocate for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault. They provide emergency shelters and services to women and children in need of support and help.
For more information on the event or to register online for any of the activities, please visit their website located at www.ywca-pdx.org or call 503.294.7458.
