FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. â David Young's game and season-high 35 points gave the Patriots their first win of the season over the Asheville Altitude, 96-92, in front of a home crowd at Crown Coliseum on Saturday night. Young jumped out to a fast start with 14 points in the first quarter, including 4-for-4 from the free throw line, to give the Patriots their first lead after a break, 26-22.
Guard Chris Brooks helped pace the Patriots in the second with six points of his own, along with another four at the free throw line for Young. The Altitude made a run at the end of the quarter, led by Kirk Penney with 10 points to steal the Patriots lead away at the half, 49-46.
The Patriots regained their lead in the third quarter with 12 points from forward Tang Hamilton. They outscored the Altitude 29-22 to regain the lead. The game remained close, but the Patriots were able to hang on behind Young's 35 to gain the victory 96-92.
Young was only one point from tying and two points from breaking Ernest Brown's franchise record of 36 points. Hamilton and Finn added 18 points and 10 points, respectively for the Patriots. Omar Cook and Jon Smith added nine apiece. The Altitude was led by Ron Slay with 20 points. Asheville had three other players in double figures; Antonio Meeking with 17, Kirk Penney with 15 and Tony Kitchings with 11.
The Patriots (1-4) return to action Monday, November 29 at the Von Braun Center against the Huntsville Flight (0-2) at 6:00 p.m. The Altitude continues their road trip on Monday against the Columbus Riverdragons at the Columbus Civic Center at 7 p.m. For more information, log onto nbdl.com.
