Baton Rouge River Bats News Release

BATON ROUGE, LA – The Baton Rouge River Bats Saturday sold pitcher Billy Brian's contract to the New York Yankees. Brian is the first River Bats member to have a major league organization purchase his contract.

"When Billy was available after the draft I called and asked him to play here. We brought him in specifically to get him into an organization," said River Bats Director of Baseball Operations L.J. Dupuy.

Brian pitched five games for Baton Rouge while working back from an arm surgery during his collegiate career.

In his last River Bats outing, Brian pitched two shutout innings against the Selma Cloverleafs Tuesday, striking out two.

Brian, now in Tampa, Fla. working out at the Yankees' player development facility, will throw several bullpen sessions. The Yankees will assign Brian to the Greensboro Bats of the South Atlantic League once he completes his workouts.

"That's what our mission is here, to be a developmental club and offer our players an opportunity to advance to an organization," Dupuy said.

The Baton Rouge River Bats are a member of the Southeastern League of Professional Baseball Clubs, an independent developmental league with teams in Americus, Ga., Baton Rouge, La., Montgomery, Ala., Ozark, Ala., Selma, Ala. and Pensacola, Fla.

Season tickets and marketing plans still are available. Contact the River Bats office at (225) 344-BATS or log on to the River Bats official web site www.brriverbats.com to receive more information about professional baseball in Baton Rouge.

Pete Goldsby Field is located next to Memorial Stadium off Interstate 110 near the Governor's Mansion in downtown Baton Rouge.
