Baton Rouge River Bats News Release

BATON ROUGE – The Baton Rouge River Bats will welcome 12 players, including seven pitchers, from the 2002 season. The Southeastern League deadline for retaining players under contract during the 2002 season passed Saturday.

Infielder Jason Williams, a member of the 1993 and 1996 National Championship squads at LSU, headlines the list of returnees. The MVP of last season's Southeastern League All-Star game, Kevin Perret, also returns, as does first baseman Cliff Wren.

Darrin Babineaux and Torik Harrison lead the list of pitchers returning, along with Chet Chambless, Robby Cuffia, Ian Doiron, Luke Fortenberry and Dan McShea. Outfielders James Jarreau and Clint Wilkerson also will return in 2003.

The most notable among the list of players free to negotiate with other SEL teams are all-star shortstop Hutch Sutter, closer Rick Greene, a member of LSU's 1991 National Championship squad, and last season's River Bats manager Chris Cassels.

The River Bats are gearing up for their 2003 Southeastern League season. Corporate nights, advertising packages and season ticket packages now are available. Contact the River Bats office at (225) 344-BATS or log on to the River Bats' official Web site, www.BRriverbats.com, to receive more information about professional baseball in Baton Rouge.

Pete Goldsby Field, home of the River Bats, is located next to Memorial Stadium off Interstate 110 near the Governor's Mansion in downtown Baton Rouge.
