Yankees Pound Hammerheads with Season-High 16 Hits

TAMPA, Fla. - The Tampa Yankees (25-16) put on an offensive show with a season-high 16 hits, clobbering the Jupiter Hammerheads (20-21), 12-1, in the series-finale on Thursday night at George M. Steinbrenner Field. Tampa claimed the series, winning three out of four.

Every Yankee batter reached base. Eight of the nine starters recorded a hit. Seven Yankees logged multi-hit games.

Jupiter scored the first run of the game off Tampa starter Chance Adams in the third. Chris Hoo drew a leadoff walk and later scored on a base hit by Brian Anderson. The Yankees quickly tied the score in the home half. Austin Aune doubled and advanced on a wild pitch before scoring on a sacrifice fly by Michael O'Neill.

Adams took a no-decision after yielding a run on four hits in four innings of work. The right-hander walked two, struck out two and tossed 46 of his 80 pitches for strikes.

The bats came alive for Tampa in the fifth against Jupiter starter Jeff Brigham. Aune pulled a leadoff home run into the Walgreen's deck in right. O'Neill beat out an infield single, stole second and moved to third on an error by Hoo. Brigham walked Jorge Mateo and Abiatal Avelino, loading the bases.

RHP Victor Araujo entered in relief for the Hammerheads and surrendered a two-run single by Billy Fleming. A single by Miguel Andujar reloaded the bases and Bo Thompson walked in a run. Zack Zehner followed with at two-run double, giving the Yankees a 7-1 lead.

Brigham (L, 0-4) allowed five runs on five hits in four innings. The righty walked three and struck out three.

Mateo greeted RHP Esmerling De La Rosa with a leadoff triple in the sixth. Avelino, Fleming and Andujar followed with three consecutive singles to left, scoring a pair. Two outs later, Santiago Nessy scored Fleming with a single to center. Andujar crossed the plate on an errant throw by centerfielder Junior Sosa, increasing the lead to 11-1.

Tampa strung together three more hits in the seventh off LHP James Buckelew. O'Neill and Mateo knocked singles and Avelino hit a ground-rule double off third baseman Rehiner Cordova and into the camera well, scoring O'Neill for a 12-1 lead.

The Hammerheads scored a pair of late runs in the ninth off LHP Caleb Frare. Dexter Kjerstad singled and Brad Haynal reached on a hit-by-pitch. One out later, Sosa reached on a strikeout-wild pitch, scoring Kjerstad. Justin Bohn beat out a double play, allowing Haynal to score before Frare closed out the game.

RHP Matt Marsh (W, 2-1) earned the win in relief, working around a couple of hits in two scoreless frames, striking out two. RHP Philip Walby dodged a pair of hits and struck out one in the eighth. Frare ended his scoreless streak at 18 innings, allowing two runs on two hits and a hit-batter in two innings, striking out two.

Avelino (3-for-4, 2B, 2 RBI, 2 R) recorded his first three-hit game of the season and is on a six-game hitting streak. Fleming (2-for-4, BB, 2 RBI, 2 R) has hit safely in nine of his last 10 games. Aune (2-for-5, HR, 2B, RBI, 2 R) hit his second home run. Mateo (2-for-4, 3B, BB, 2 R, SB) leads the league with seven triples. Zehner (2-for-4, 2B, BB, 2 RBI) recorded his 10th multi-hit game.

Up next, the Yankees embark on a 12-game road trip, with the first stop being Fort Myers for a four-game series with the Miracle, beginning at 7:05 p.m. on Friday at Hammond Stadium. LHP Josh Rogers (0-2, 5.63 ERA) is scheduled to make his fourth start for Tampa. LHP Randy Rosario (2-3, 3.48 ERA) will start for Fort Myers.
