Yankees Fall in Extras to Threshers, 8-5
TAMPA - The Tampa Yankees (10-9) pushed across the tying run in the bottom of the ninth before the Clearwater Threshers (10-9) scored three runs in the 10th in an 8-5 final on Monday night at George M. Steinbrenner Field.
Clearwater took an early lead in the first against Tampa starter Jonathan Holder. The first four batters of the game reached, including a two-run single by Dylan Cozens. Willians Astudillo drove in the third run of the inning with a groundout.
The Yankees chipped away with two runs in the fourth off of RHP Victor Arano. With Mike Ford at second and two outs, Radley Haddad hit an RBI single. Vicente Conde then struck out but reached on a wild pitch. An RBI double by Claudio Custodio nearly tied the game. However, Custodio was called out at third before Conde touched the plate.
Tampa tied the game in the fifth. Mark Payton singled and advanced on a wild pitch. A groundout by Tyler Wade moved Payton to third before Danny Oh drove him in with a sacrifice fly.
Holder settled down after the first inning, retiring 12 of the next 13 batters. The Threshers then loaded the bases with nobody out. A run scored on a fielder's choice grounder by Mitchell Walding. Zach Green added an RBI single before Holder escaped the inning.
Holder earned a no-decision after allowing five runs (two earned) on six hits and a walk, striking out three in six innings pitched.
The T-Yanks inched closer in the eighth thanks to a sacrifice fly by Angelo Gumbs. RHP Ulises Joaquin (1-0) pitched into the ninth in search for his fourth save. Joaquin walked Vicente Conde, who advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Claudio Custodio. A bunt by Mark Payton put the tying run at third with two outs. Conde then scored as Wade reached on an error at second base by Drew Stankiewicz.
RHP Angel Rincon (0-2) worked a scoreless ninth before continuing into the 10th. Angelo Mora led off with a single and advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Chase Harris. Three consecutive hits followed for Clearwater, resulting in an 8-5 lead for the Threshers.
RHP Mark Leiter earend his first save of the season after striking out a pair in a 1-2-3 10th.
The series wraps up with the rubber match held in Clearwater at Bright House Field on Tuesday night. RHP Eric Ruth (1-0, 2.70 ERA) is set to throw for Tampa. RHP Miguel Nunez (0-1, 7.30 ERA) will get the ball for the Threshers.
The next home game for the T-Yanks is at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, May 1st against the Lakeland Flying Tigers on Fight Like A Kid Night. ALL ticket proceeds from the night will go to 3-year old Salvatore who was diagnosed with Stage 4 Cancer. He is planning to be here to throw out the first pitch!
