Yankees Avoid Series Sweep
June 25, 2016 - Appalachian League (ApL)
Pulaski River Turtles News Release
Tim Lynch helped lead the way with three doubles as the Pulaski Yankees (1-2) avoided a sweep at home by the Danville Braves (2-1). The Yankees rode away with a 9-5 win in front of a packed house of 2,143 fans Saturday night. Yankees' reliever Cody Hamlin picked up his first win of the season pitching for 3.1 innings allowing three hits while striking out four. Braves' reliever Gabino Avalos was tagged with the loss pitching for 1.1 innings giving up four hits and hour runs while walking one and striking out three.
Pulaski now has a six-game road trip and will travel to Kingsport Mets and Elizabethton Twins. The first game against the Mets is today at 4 p.m.
Danville struck first for the third game in a row bringing three runners home to score in the first and plating a pair in the second. However, Pulaski kept a steady pace scoring runners to keep up and eventually pull ahead. In the first, a scary moment unfolded whenever Andy Diaz was hit in the face with a pitch. Thankfully, he was able to get up and leave the field under his own power. Ben Ruta replaced Diaz for the rest of the game and scored in the first and led off the third with a triple. He scored on a double from Kevin Cornelius to make it 5-2.
The Yankees opened the game up in the sixth scoring four runs to pull ahead including back-to-back doubles from Cornelius and Lynch to gain a 6-5 lead. But the squad pulled away in the seventh with back-to-back doubles opening the home half for the second inning in a row. Then a pair of Danville fielding errors allowed Leonardo Molina to score and a single from Ruta brought home Josh Gardiner to make it 9-5. A strong pitching performance from Hamlin and solid defense sealed the win.
