Xplorers signee Brown gets call to AFL
SOUTHAVEN --- WR/DB Maurice Brown, who was assigned to the Memphis Xplorers earlier this month, has signed for the upcoming season with the Nashville Kats of the AFL.
"I am excited for Maurice to be getting this opportunity with Nashville," Xplorers Head Coach Danton Barto said. "This is the second year in a row that we had a player move up to a higher level of football before playing a down with us. It just reaffirms that Chris Bauer (Xplorers Director of Player Personnel) and myself have been going after the right type of impact players the past two seasons."
"This just adds to our long list of players that have signed with us and have then been able to move up," Bauer said. "We wish Maurice luck with Nashville."
The six-foot-two, 210 pound Brown finished his four years at Iowa in 2003 13th on the Hawkeye's all-time receiving yards list with 1515 and 18th on the receptions list with 84. Following his senior season, he was selected to play in the Senior Bowl and Gridiron Classic. His 11 touchdown receptions in 2002 broke the school record and his 966 receiving yards that season rank fourth on the school's all-time list. The Fort Lauderdale, FL native also ranked fourth nationally in 2002 with a 20.2 yards per reception average. He was named honorable mention All-Big Ten following the 2002 season.
The Kats went 6-9-1 and finished in the third place in the Central Division of the AFL's American Conference last season.
