Xplorers search out ways to recycle goods for community use

Memphis Xplorers News Release

SOUTHAVEN, Miss.—Corporate recycling can have immediate, tangible benefits for local communities, as groups from DeSoto Central High School, North DeSoto Community Church and a Bruce Ladnier’s fast-pitch softball coaching service will tell you after receiving more than 60 athletic mats from the Memphis Xplorers arena football team.

DeSoto Central High School received about 25 of the mats from the Xplorers.

“Our football coaches have all kinds of uses in mind for them,” Principal Charlie Tipton said. “Those mats are expensive, and there’s no sense in throwing that stuff away if someone can use it. We’re really grateful that the Xplorers donated theirs to us.”

Tipton said the mats will also be used in physical education classes. Softball coaches at the school may also put the mats up with targets on them in the gym, so the girls can practice inside, Tipton said.

Ladnier has three daughters, ages 17, 14, and 10, all of whom play competitive and high school fast-pitch softball. He coaches girls in fast-pitch technique and is working on an indoor facility.

“In the summertime, everyone’s playing ball, but in the winter the girls need a place to work on their skills,” Ladnier said. “This will give them a little more freedom.”

Families and individuals who practice karate at North DeSoto Community Church will also benefit from the use of the pads.

“The classes are open to anyone, for a small fee that we use to pay the instructor,” church member Annette Stone said. “It’s a way for us to reach out to the community, and it provides a place where families can participate in an activity together, or where older people can exercise and not feel out of place.

“My pastor was really excited when he heard the Xplorers were giving the mats away—we’re just a small church and we don’t have the money to go out and buy those things, so it really helped us.”
