Memphis Xplorers News Release
Moline, IL-The Memphis Xplorers of the af2 lost their first game of the season 45-42 to the Quad City Steamwheelers in front of 6,221 at the MARK of the Quad Cities Saturday.
The score was tied with eight seconds left in the game, when Quad City kicker Nick Gatto came out to attempt a 47-yard field goal. The snap was high and Gatto was forced to attempt an illegal kick out of the back right side of the endzone. The Xplorers were then charged with holding on the return, and a personal foul for clipping. The home town official crew took a few minutes to decide the ruling, and ruled in favor of the Steamwheelers, giving them a second attempt at the field goal with no time on the clock. Gatto made the second attempt and the Steamwheelers upset the Xplorers.
Xplorers DS Scott Cunningham won the ADT defensive player award with two interceptions. The Army Ironman was Terrell Adams, who added three touchdowns to his season total of seven. He also added four solo tackles. The Offensive MVP was Kevin Prentiss.
"I am very upset with the ruling on the field," stated Xplorers Head Coach Danton Barto. "We should not have even let it come down to that kind of situation. It is a tough loss, but we still are in great shape to make a run at the ArenaCup."
Next Saturday the Xplorers will host the Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz. Game time is scheduled for 7:05. Single game tickets start at $7. For tickets call 662-280-9120, visit the DeSoto Civic Center box office, or log onto to ticketmaster.com today. The Xplorers can be heard all season long on Sports Radio WMC The Mighty 790.
