Memphis Xplorers News Release
SOUTHAVEN, Miss.âThe Community Foundation of Northwest Mississippi and the Xplorers are teaming up this weekend to bring about positive change in local communities by selling tickets to the Xplorers' Saturday, May 17 game against the Louisville Fire at the DeSoto Civic Center, located just 15 minutes south of downtown Memphis. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. The Community Foundation will receive $5 from each ticket it sells. The theme is Hawaiian Night. To buy tickets from Community Foundation, call 662-449-5002.
For "Hawaiian Night" debut Saturday, fans will receive a Hawaiian lei at the door and at halftime the University of Mississippi steel drum band will perform. Hawaiian themed food will be available in the Xplorers Club.
Tickets purchased through the Community Foundation prior to game time are available for $10, with $5 from each ticket sold going to the Community Foundation.
"We're happy to work with the Xplorers," Community Foundation Director of Community Development William Bailey said. "We're thrilled they are going to spotlight the Community Foundation non-profit of the night. It's important to build good relationships and synergy among the different sectors of the area. Here we have a professional sports team partnering with a non-profit organization to help build up their community. They're setting a great example for other businesses. It's nice to see that an entertainment and recreational organization is embracing the serious needs of our community."
The Community Foundation was created in January 2002 by community leaders in northwest Mississippi to serve the state's nine northwest counties: Coahoma, DeSoto, Lafayette, Marshall, Panola, Quitman, Tallahatchie, Tate, and Tunica.
The 501 (c)-3 Community Foundation stimulates community improvement by encouraging people to make permanent, lasting impact in their communities through the establishment of endowed funds. A portion of the interest from that fund is used yearly to further charitable causes while the main contribution continues to grow, ensuring that the gift will be permanent and will increase in impact.
"The Community Foundation will also benefit Northwest Mississippi by using gifts and donations from within our area to attract funding from outside sources," Bailey said. "Many regional and national institutions that give funds to charitable causes view a community foundation as a community's most stable vehicle for administering their funding."
The Community Foundation's major fundraising event is the Crystal Ball, held each December. This black-tie party features dinner, live and silent auctions, dancing and live music, and an awards presentation to honor the philanthropic leaders of our communities. Reservations for this year's Fourth Annual Crystal Ball â "A Night in the Tropics" â may be purchased for $125 by calling 662-449-5002.
"With the Community Foundation of Northwest Mississippi leading community development efforts, our area is poised for a renaissance of charitable giving that will improve the quality of life for all the citizens of Northwest Mississippi," Bailey said.
The Community Foundation of Northwest Mississippi's most current project is bringing Boys & Girls Clubs of America to DeSoto County in an effort to cut down on truancy, teenage crime, drug use and teen pregnancy rates. Boys and Girls Clubs' mission is to inspire and enable all young people, especially those from disadvantaged circumstances, to realize their full potential as productive, responsible and caring citizens.
"The Community Foundation helps donors put their money to work long-term for the benefit of non-profit organizations," Bailey said. "Another one of our missions is to facilitate charitable acts and works in the community. Helping bring Boys and Girls Clubs here is one great way for us to serve the community."
