Wynder Listed on USMNT's Preliminary Gold Cup Roster
June 1, 2023 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Louisville City FC News Release
Louisville City FC defender Josh Wynder remains on the U.S. Men's National Team radar having made the preliminary roster released Thursday for the 2023 Concacaf Gold Cup.
The Louisville native Wynder received his first senior team call-up in April for a training camp and friendly against Concacaf rival Mexico. Since then, the defender joined U.S. Soccer's U-20 World Cup team that has advanced to the tournament's quarterfinals.
Wynder is the only USL Championship player in contention to make the USA's final roster for the Gold Cup, the biennial tournament that determines a champion across North America, Central America and the Caribbean. Former LouCity star Jonathan Gomez - also a member of the U-20 World Cup squad - made the list as well.
The preliminary roster will be trimmed down later this month before the red, white and blue kick off group stage play June 24. Hosted by the United States and Canada, the Gold Cup runs through the July 16 final. Notably, the Americans would play their quarterfinal July 9 at nearby TQL Stadium in Cincinnati should they advance out of the group.
Doors continue to open for Wynder, a rising star center back who signed his first professional contract in June of 2021 and a year later earned his first U.S. youth national team call-up. U.S. Soccer named Wynder a finalist for its 2022 Young Male Player of the Year, and he remains on track for a high-profile summer transfer having recently turned 18.
Wynder numbers six appearances in purple this year - five of those starts - amid a busy international schedule. Despite limited club availability, he continues to rank third on LouCity's team in clearances (16) and tackles (13).
