Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Waterloo, Iowa - The biggest scoring outburst by a Waterloo Black Hawks defenseman in more than three seasons led the United States Hockey League to name Cooper Wylie the USHL Defenseman of the Week on Tuesday.

During a Saturday night home game against the Dubuque Fighting Saints, Wylie assisted on a first period score by Tyler Kostelecky. During the third, he set up power play goals by both Mason Reiners and Michel LaStarza, the latter to force overtime with less than 32 seconds remaining. Then 2:02 into the extra period, Wylie scored his first goal of the season to give the Black Hawks a 4-3 victory.

The four-point night was the biggest by a Waterloo blue-liner since Ben Finkelstein produced six points (one goal, five assists) on January 27, 2018 against the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders.

Wylie now has six points (one goal, five assists) in seven games this season. That ties him as the USHL's third-highest scoring defenseman, as well as giving him a share of the Black Hawks' scoring lead. Wylie and Reiners are responsible for two of the six game-winning goals by USHL defensemen so far this season.

Spending his second year as a Black Hawk, the St. Cloud State recruit recorded two goals and 16 assists in 2020/21, appearing in 52 of Waterloo's 53 games. Nine of Wylie's points last season came in power play situations. He also led Waterloo defensemen with 79 shots on goal.

The Hawks are on home ice this weekend to host the Lincoln Stars at Young Arena Friday and Saturday.
