Allen Wranglers News Release
ALLEN, TX-Saturday night's game against the West Texas Roughnecks was a must win for the Wranglers.
With a win, the Wranglers would take over the top spot of the Lonestar Division and move that much closer to an automatic playoff berth and home-field advantage; with a loss, the Wranglers would move to second in the division and be looking at a much less fortunate playoff situation. The team travelled to Midland and walked away with a 54-26 win over the Roughnecks on Saturday night; that win ensured the Wranglers a spot in the 2011 IFL playoffs.
"I am so proud of how well this football team played on Saturday, "Wrangler head coach Chris MacKeown said."
The Wranglers outscored the Roughnecks 41-6 in the first half of play. Wrangler QB Kewan Dewberry hooked up with WR Bobby Chase for three touchdowns; Dewberry also connected with Jackie Robinson and Dedrick Poole in the air for six points each. The Wrangler defense added points of its own when DB Frankie Solomon ran back an interception for a touchdown late in the second quarter.
Garrett Courtney was perfect in extra points for the Wranglers and knocked in two field goals for the team in the second half. Mike Ward would be the last Wrangler to score with a 5-yard TD run early in the fourth quarter.
"Being 8-3 has never been our goal," MacKeown said. "We are playing to win the IFL Championship. Each week we have to improve as individuals and as a team to achieve our ultimate goal of bringing a championship to North Texas."
The Wranglers return home next Saturday, May 21st to take on the Amarillo Venom. The team will also be hosting Operation Appreciation, an initiative to honor our armed forces that night. Kickoff against the Venom is set for 7:05 p.m. at Allen Event Center.
