AUGUST 15th BUFFALO (23-20)/(58-60) at WORCESTER (26-16)/(62-51) 4:05 pm
Buffalo Bisons RHP Richard Gallardo (0-3, 5.12) vs. Worcester Red Sox RHP Blake Wehunt (1-1, 3.60)
Two to Two with Two to go - The Worcester Red Sox and the Buffalo Bisons (AAA-Toronto) - who have split the first four games of their 6-game set - will use the weekend to determine the series outcome. First up is today's 4:05 pm start live on NESN and NASH 98. FM. The series will conclude tomorrow afternoon at 1:05 pm. That will end Worcester's season-long 12-game homestand. The Sox are 6-4 thus far. The WooSox have won each of their last five series (of more than two games) since dropping 5 of 6 to Toledo to begin the 2nd half from June 23-28.
Unlucky 13 - For the second time this week, the WooSox lost a game when they had the chance to reach a season-high 13-games over .500. Last night they came in with a 62-50 record to equal their season-high of 12 games over .500 for the second time this season (60-48 on August 8 the other). However, their 6-2 loss last night - along with a 7-6 defeat to Lehigh Valley last Sunday - prevented the Sox from peaking at 13-games above for the first time since September 6, 2023 when they were 73-60. The WooSox were also a 2nd half-best 11-games over .500 on both August 8 (24-13) and on August 13 (26-15) but lost their next games and are now 26-16.
What Have You Done for Me Lately - Worcester is 2-2 in their last 4 games but they have still won 6 of their last 9 games, 10 of their last 14 overall, 14 of their last 18 home games, are 17-5 since July 22 and 26-10 since June 28.
Scoreboard Watching - Some consolation for the WooSox despite their loss last night, the three other top contenders in the 2nd half pennant race also all lost. So now, Indianapolis remains on top at 27-16 followed by the WooSox at 26-16 and then Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (25-16), and Durham (25-17). Worcester has rebounded quite nicely since an 0-5 start to the 2nd half and they are currently the IL East leader and alone in 2nd-place overall in the 20-team International League just a 1/2 game behind Indianapolis (the IL West leader). The best second half record among all 20-teams in the league earns the one playoff spot that comes with that and a date with 1st half champ Memphis in a best 2 out of 3 series from September 22-24 in Tennessee. The winner of that series goes to Las Vegas to take on the Pacific Coast League champion in a one-game Triple-A National Championship Game on September 26. Worcester has 32 games remaining (14 home & 18 away).
