Greeneville Astros News Release
Greeneville, TN - The Greeneville Astros (9-10), led by Trent Woodward's first two professional home runs, bounced back from an early deficit to defeat the Johnson City Cardinals (11-8) by a score of 8-2 on Wednesday night at Pioneer Park. Woodward, a 2014 20th round draft selection out of Fresno State, finished his night going three-for-four, with the two homers, and three RBI.
Sean McMullen, who also knocked in three runs, made a strong contribution towards the Astros victory as well. He went two-for-four with a double on the night and raised his team-leading batting average to .375 on the season.
Despite all the Astros' success, it was the Cardinals who actually jumped out to an early lead in the first inning. Casey Turgeon led off the game for Johnson City with a triple and scored on an Oscar Mercado RBI single for the Cardinals first run. Then, later in the inning, Mercado scored on a wild pitch to give the Cardinals a 2-0 advantage.
In the bottom of the first, however, the Astros cut the deficit in half when Jason Martin scored on a Sean McMullen ground out. However, it was the third inning when the game really turned in their favor.
With two outs and Ramon Laureano on third, Juan Santana reached first on a Cardinals fielding error to allow the tying score to head home. Sean McMullen immediately followed with a RBI double to put the Astros on top, 3-2. Then, Trent Woodward connected on the first of his two homers to give the Astros a four-run inning and a 5-2 lead.
In the fifth inning, Jason Martin got the Astros going again with his league-leading sixth triple of the season. Then, McMullen brought him home with a line drive single into right field to push the Astros lead to 6-2.
Still holding a four-run lead into the bottom of the eighth inning, the Astros tacked on more when Woodward led off with a solo shot for his second homer of the night. Then, with Jacob Nottingham on and one out, Bryan Muniz ripped a run-scoring double into left field to give the Astros an 8-2 advantage and conclude the scoring.
The Astros finished the night with eight runs on 10 hits with no errors. Meanwhile, Johnson City had two runs on six hits and three errors.
Astros' starting right-hander Agapito Barrios earned his first win of the season as he pitched five innings, gave up two runs on four hits, and struck out two. Devonte German followed and gave up two hits with two strikeouts over three scoreless innings. Then Aaron Greenwood came on in the ninth and allowed one walk while striking out two to finish the game.
The Astros will face the Cardinals in game two on Thursday at Pioneer Park. Promotions for the evening include Thirsty Thursday and $1 Dog Night. First pitch is set for 7:00pm.
