Wood Finishes Strong in Hawaii

Burlington, IA (November 16, 2007) - Blake Wood struck out a career-high 12 on Wednesday in Hawaii and Mario Lisson had a walk-off homer on Sunday in Venezuela to highlight the week for former Burlington Bees playing in baseball's fall and winter leagues. The Arizona Fall League wrapped up its regular season yesterday and seven former Bees are headed to the post-season as the Surprise Rafters clinched the Western Division title with their win at Peoria on Wednesday.

Wood also picked up a win on Wednesday after fanning a dozen in five innings of a 4-3 win over Honolulu. It was his only start of the week and maybe his last of the year as the HWB wraps up its season on Sunday. Wood sits 2-1 with a 3.55 ERA in eight starts. In 33 innings, he's struck out a league-best 57 batters while also walking a league-high nine. SS Jeff Bianchi played last Saturday for the first time in nearly two weeks and went 1-5 with a double and scored a run, but hasn't appeared again this week. He is batting .284 in 18 games. RH reliever Tyler Chambliss didn't pitch this week as Jim Gabella's West Oahu Canefires went 4-2 this week, but are 13-21 overall.

Lisson (played for the Bees in 2005-06) had a hit in all five games he played this week for Caracas and homered on Saturday and Sunday last weekend. Sunday's homer came in the bottom of the tenth inning to win the game for the Leones. Lisson is batting .253 with a league-leading seven home runs and 16 RBI in 27 games. Lisson has a comfortable lead in the home run race as the closest competitors are a group of players with four. He is also eighth in the league in RBI and eighth with 16 runs scored. 1B Tomas Perez ('94) had a hit in eight of his last nine games and is third in the league in batting with a .368 mark for Magallanes. C Raul Chavez ('91) is 4-9 in his last three games and is batting .351 for Aragua. RHP Kyle Middleton (2002) pitched five strong innings in a start for Aragua last Sunday and is 2-0 with a 2.97 ERA in six starts overall. Teammate Brian Bass (2001-02) hasn't started since last Friday and remains 3-1 with a 2.41 ERA in seven starts. RHP Yovany D'Amico (2005-07) got his first start for Lara last Saturday and allowed two runs in five innings, but lost. He's 1-1 with a 4.24 ERA in nine appearances.

OF Mitch Maier (2004) and C Matt Tupman (2003) have caught fire in the Dominican. Maier had a three-hit game on Sunday and was 5-16 with a homer this week. Maier is batting .294 with two homers and ten RBI in 19 games for Cibao and is tied for tenth in the league in batting, tied for fifth in hits, and tied for seventh in RBI. Tupman was 7-14 this week with two doubles and two RBI and has five multi-hit games in his last seven contests. He's now fourth in the league with a .333 average and tied for second with five doubles.

2B Marc Maddox (2007) went hitless in his last five games for Surprise, dropping his final AFL average to .321, good for seventh in the league. He had two home runs, five doubles, and 13 RBI in 21 games. OF Chris Lubanski (2004) hit .200 with three home runs, 15 RBI, and tied for second in the league with three triples in 23 games. 1B Kila Kaaihue (2003-04) hit .203 with three home runs and 15 RBI in 20 games. He was tied for third in the league with 17 walks. OF Jose Duarte hit .156 in13 games on the "taxi squad." On the mound LH Dusty Hughes (2004) was one of the top pitchers in the AFL, going 1-0 with a 2.45 ERA n six starts. LH Nate Hoelscher (2003) was 1-0 with a 1.50 ERA and one save in ten relief appearances. RH Devon Lowery (2003) made six appearances and had no record and a 2.70 ERA in six games. The Rafters will meet the Scottsdale Scorpions in the AFL Championship Game on Saturday afternoon.
