Wolves win 47-29

UNCASVILLE, C.T. (April 13th, 2002)- After a disheartening opening night, the Mohegan Wolves (1-1) bounced back Friday night in big fashion by beating the Norfolk Nighthawks (0-2) by the score 47-29 in front of 3,585 loyal Wolves fans. The win was the first in franchise history. Wolves Offensive Specialist Brandon Burnside was named game MVP with 7 receptions for 63 yards. He had 1 receiving touchdown and 1 kickoff return for a touchdown. Mohegan FB/LB Kenyea Ware earned Ironman of the Game honors for his efforts. Ware had a rushing touchdown before leaving the game with a knee injury late in the 3rd quarter. Defensive Specialist Carlos McLaurin was named ADT Defensive Player of the Game. McLaurin tallied 3.5 tackles and had an interception to help the Wolves to the victory.

The first quarter was all Mohegan as the Wolves did all the scoring. QB Cable Davis was able to hook up with both Burnside twins; first Brent on a 9 yard connection, then Brandon on a 31 yard pass following a Norfolk fumble. Kenyea Ware rounded out the quarter with a 1-yard plunge to give the Wolves the lead 21-0 after one period.

Norfolk answered in the second quarter with a Farrel Payton run from 2 yards out. The Wolves would come right back when Melvin Phillips hauled in a 24 yard Cable Davis pass for a score. Norfolk WR/LB Jay Clarke picked off Davis and ran it in to round out the scoring for the half, with the Wolves leading 27-14.

Carl Wisnieski had a 1-yard touchdown run late in the 3rd that ignited a flurry of scoring late in the period. Norfolk's Gary Briggs hooked up with QB Roy Johnson from 30 yards out for a touchdown with 18 seconds remaining in the quarter. However, Brandon Burnside would end the quarter with a 56-yard kickoff return for a touchdown giving the Wolves a commanding 40-21 lead at the end of the third.

The fourth saw Cable Davis hook up with his fourth different receiver for a touchdown when he connected with Anthony Giovingo from 38 yards out. Norfolk added a touchdown late from Gary Briggs, but the Wolves prevailed 47-29.

Norfolk was led by QB Roy Johnson who passed for 153 yards and 2 touchdowns on 11-22 passing. Gary Briggs led the Nighthawks receiving attack with 6 receptions for 84 yards and 2 TD's.

Mohegan QB Cable Davis was 19 of 31 for 211 yards and 4 touchdowns. Wolves Offensive Specialist Brandon Burnside had 223 yards of total offense to lead the team. WR/LB Anthony Giovingo had 4 catches for 67 yards and a TD as well.

The Wolves will be the on road for the next three weeks. Next week they travel to Rochester, to take on the Brigade. Rochester hosts Albany tonight, both teams are 1-0. Kickoff is slated for 7:30 next Friday night at Rochester's Blue Cross Arena.
