Mohegan Wolves News Release

Wilkes-Barre, PA (June 15th, 2002)- The Mohegan Wolves (3-8) lost to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers (4-7) last night by the score of 51-26 at First Union Arena, in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. The loss makes playoff hopes even slimmer for the expansion Wolves.

Turnovers on the Wolves first three possessions put them in the hole 28-0 after the first quarter of play, and Mohegan could never recover. Wolves' offensive specialist Brandon Burnside added two touchdowns in the second quarter, a third in the third, and Jeff Cogell punched in a touchdown run from 1 yard out to round out the scoring for the Wolves.

A bright spot again for Mohegan was OS Brandon Burnside. Burnside caught 11 passes for 186 yards and 3 touchdowns, strengthening his bid to become af2 offensive player of the year. QB Cable Davis passed for 187 yards and 2 touchdowns after missing much of the second quarter after a vicious hit knocked the wind out of him. He returned and played the entire second half. Heron O'Neal added an interception to go with 4 ½ tackles on the night.

For the second straight week Pioneers QB Bryan Snyder was named Game MVP. Snyder passed for 232 yards and 5 touchdowns. FB/LB Elly Salamo was named Ironman of the Game. Salamo had 17 yards rushing, 12 yards receiving, a receiving TD and blocked a field goal attempt that was recovered for a Pioneers touchdown. Terrell Johnson was named ADT Defensive Player of the Game. Johnson intercepted a pass, and recovered a fumble in the victory.

For the Wolves, the road doesn't get any easier. Next weekend they travel to Richmond, Virginia to take on the 8-2 Richmond Speed. Game time is set for 7:30 next Saturday night at the Richmond Coliseum.
