Mohegan Wolves News Release
UNCASVILLE, C.T. (April 5th, 2002)- The Mohegan Wolves lost their inaugural game in disappointing fashion to the Albany Conquest tonight by the score of 29-14. Albany offensive specialist Corey Hill was named game MVP while Albany defensive specialist Henry Baker was named ADT Defensive Player of the Game. Offensive/Defensive Lineman Alex Houston was named Ironman of the game as well. The loss dropped Mohegan to 0-1 overall and also cost them a place in the divisional standings.
The first quarter saw the Wolves provide a defensive stop on the opening drive of the 2002 campaign, holding Albany to a 23-yard field goal by Chris Drennan. Mohegan answered in spectacular fashion when Cable Davis hooked up with Brandon Burnside on the first offensive play in team history for a 33-yard touchdown. That would be all the scoring for the first quarter.
Cable would hook up with the second of the Burnside twins, Brent Burnside, to put the Wolves up 14-3 early in the second. Albany would add a late touchdown from QB John Krueger to Mike Guazzo from 6 yards out. The Conquest missed the extra point and the Wolves would lead 14-9 at the half.
Albany would be the only team to score in the second half adding a touchdown in the third quarter to offensive specialist Corey Hill, and another in the fourth on a 4 yard plunge by Shcree Lewis to round out the scoring.
Mohegan was led by Cable Davis who had 191 yards and 2 touchdowns in his first professional football game. Andy Macaione led the Wolves receiving corps with 4 receptions for 51 yards. Carlos McLaurin paced the Wolves defensive attack with 7 tackles, while Melvin Phillips had the best all around performance with 5.5 tackles, an interception and 3 receptions for 18 yards.
Albany was led by QB John Krueger who had 130 yards passing and 2 touchdowns while Corey Hill recorded 14 receptions for 103 yards and a touchdown.
The Wolves will be at home next Friday night when they host the Norfolk Nighthawks. Norfolk faces Cape Fear tomorrow night (April 6th) before coming to the den to take on the Wolves. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
