Mohegan Wolves News Release
NEW LONDON, Conn. (May 14, 2003) â The Mohegan Wolves (arenafootball2) return home this Friday night, May 16, to tackle the Richmond Speed after suffering two straight road defeats. The Wolves (3-2) are also still seeking their fourth win of 2003, which would establish a single-season franchise high. Friday's game, which features a special pre-game autograph session by members of the WNBA's Connecticut Sun, will kick off at 7:30 p.m. at Mohegan Sun Arena. The first 1,000 fans inside the doors will also receive a FREE autograph football, courtesy of The Day, WCTY and L&M Hospital.
Wolves Game Five Recap â 5/3/03 â In Mohegan's most recent game on Saturday, May 3, the Wolves lost for the second straight week on the road, 37-34, to the Rochester Brigade. Rochester (1-4) jumped out early and often on Mohegan and before the Wolves knew it, they were behind 27-0 at the half. To Mohegan's credit, they did fight their way back, and actually led at two different points in the fourth quarter. Former Mohegan QB Kevin Carty, however, put Rochester out front for good with 28 seconds left when he found OS Martino Theus for an 8-yard touchdown catch. That go-ahead scoring toss gave the Brigade a 37-34 lead. The Wolves had one final possession, but time ran out on them at the Rochester 13-yard line. Mohegan's three offensive touchdowns were scored by WR/DB Anthony Comer (29-yard catch), OS Mel Long (8-yard catch) and QB Greg Smith (1-yard run). Smith replaced starter Ryan Tracey late in the second quarter and threw for 104 yards and two touchdowns on the day. The rookie from Dartmouth also threw two interceptions in his first appearance with the Wolves. Mohegan OL/DL Charlie Cook and FB/LB Jeff Cogell scored the Wolves' final two touchdowns on fumble recoveries.
This Friday's matchup at a glance â Mohegan Wolves (3-2) vs. Richmond Speed (3-2) Friday's game between the Wolves and Speed will be the second all-time meeting between the two teams. Richmond currently leads the series, 1-0. Their only other head-to-head battle came last season (6/22/02) at Richmond. The Speed throttled Mohegan in that contest, winning 61-20. Richmond is led by QB Roy Johnson. In the Speed's last three games (all wins), Johnson has been on fire, connecting on nearly 74 percent (65-of-88) of his passes for 819 yards and 18 touchdowns. In Richmond's most recent win against Rochester on May 10, Johnson competed 18-of-25 passes for 219 yards, eight touchdowns and no Interceptions. He currently leads the league in passer rating at 130.4. Another player to watch for the Speed is OS Damon Thompson, who ranks among the league leaders in receptions and receiving yards per game. Mohegan will be led again by its defense, which ranks fifth overall in the league, yielding just 211.0 yards per game. Offensively, the Wolves hope for a steady performance from their quarterback and receiving corps.
