Mohegan Wolves News Release
NEW LONDON, C.T. (April 25th, 2002)- After a successful first road trip in franchise history the Wolves will stay close to home for their next journey. The team will make the short trip down Interstate 95 to New Haven to take on the 0-3 New Haven Ninjas. This game marks the first time in state history that two arenafootball2 teams from Connecticut will play each other. That historic fact will be noted by dubbing the match up the "Constitution Cup" and the awarding of a traveling trophy known as the "Governor's Trophy," to the winner of this week's game. The trophy will reside with the winning team until it is lost to the opposing team on the field. The teams will meet twice more this season with the winner of the final game on May 31st retaining the trophy until the 2003 season.
In preparation for the upcoming two-game home stand beginning May 10th the Mohegan Wolves have been actively participating in southeastern Connecticut communities. The team has donated tickets to the following charities in order to raise funds for each of their unique causes: Mothers Against Drunk Driving, Osteogenesis Imperfecta Foundation, Ara Parsegian Foundation, and the Windom Benefit Charity Golf Tournament. The Wolves also made their presence known at the Kiwanis Club of New London to forge a working relationship with the club. Any club or organization interested in working with the Wolves can contact the Mohegan Wolves offices at (860) 443-1900.
THE SERIES
Mohegan's game versus New Haven will be the first of three games this season to determine state bragging rights. The Wolves will return to New Haven on May 24th to take on the Ninjas, and then welcome them to the den the following weekend for the final game (May 31st). The Ninjas are currently 0-3 after loses to Rochester (61-34 on April 6th), Cape Fear (38-20 on April 13th), and Richmond (62-20 on April 20th). The game also marks the first time that the Wolves will have to face a former teammate. New Haven Offensive Specialist James Duckett was one of the Wolves final cuts in pre-season camp and he caught on with New Haven several weeks later. He recorded one catch for five yards in his Ninja debut. The Wolves and Ninjas share one common opponent in Rochester. The Ninjas were defeated by the Brigade on opening night, while the Wolves beat Rochester last weekend.
-Cont'd- INJURY REPORT
The Wolves were banged up entering the game at Rochester, and came away in the same shape. FB/LB Kenyea Ware, who was injured in the game versus Norfolk, will be lost for the year with a torn ACL. OL/DL Alex Sepulveda missed his second straight game vs. Rochester with a sore lower back. WR/DB Andy Macaione suffered a staph infection against Norfolk and was unable to play against Rochester. OL/DL Jeff Cogell is suffering from a partially torn triceps muscle and is questionable for the New Haven game. OS Brandon Burnside missed the second half of last week's game with a bruised back. He is questionable for this week's game as well.
ROSTER REPORT
The Wolves have been assigned Offensive/Defensive Lineman Shannon Scarbrough. Shannon attended the University of Cincinnati where he played both fullback and tight end. He will shore up the Wolves line and provide depth at a much-needed position. Scarbrough stands 6'4 and weighs 265 pounds. He has the versatility to play on the line or fullback/linebacker. The Wolves have played the last two weeks with a roster of only 20 players, when af2 league rules allow 21.
NEXT WEEK'S OPPONENT: Norfolk Nighthawks (0-3) 5/4/02
In Week 6 of the inaugural af2 campaign for the Wolves they will have a return match up with the Norfolk Nighthawks (0-3), whom the Wolves defeated 47-29 on April 12th. That night game MVP Brandon Burnside recorded a touchdown receiving and returning. He had 7 receptions for 63 yards.
