MANCHESTER , N.H. (May 18, 2005) â The arenafootball2 (af2) league office announced today that for the first time in team history, the Manchester Wolves have secured the top ranking of the weekly Coaches Poll. The Wolves are just the second team of the 2005 season to obtain the top position, receiving 202 of a possible 228 points. This Friday night (May 20) the No.1-ranked Wolves (5-1) play host to the South Georgia Wildcats (2-4) at the Verizon Wireless Arena. Kick-off is scheduled for 7:30 PM.
Manchester 's total included eight first-place votes, up seven from last week. The Memphis Xplorers received 198 points including seven first-place mentions to control the No.2 ranking. The four other teams receiving first-place votes were the No.3 Green Bay Blizzard, the No.4 Florida Firecats, the No.7 Central Valley Coyotes, and the unranked Bossier-Shreveport Battle Wings. Florida held the top spot for the first seven weeks of the af2 season.
"We've put together a nice run so far and the guys have really come together a lot sooner than I expected," Wolves Head Coach Ben Bennett said. "But honestly, it doesn't matter where we are after six games, it only matters where we are after 16 games."

Game Seven Preview â Wolves vs. S. Georgia Wildcats â 7:30 PM (Verizon Wireless Arena)
The Wolves (5-1) enter Friday night's home game in a first-place tie in the East Division on the strength of a five-game winning streak. The Wildcats are currently tied for second place in the American Conference, South Division with a 2-4 record. South Georgia has played well of late, however, winning their last two games after starting the year 0-4. The Wildcats most recent win was their first at home in 2005, a 62-48 victory against the winless Arkansas Twisters. They are led by veteran QB and former AFL signal caller Bobby Pesavento. Through five games, Pesavento has thrown for 1,355 yards and 32 touchdowns. WR/LB Chris McKinney leads the receiving corps with 35 catches for 343 yards and 11 touchdowns. As a group, South Georgia's offensive averages 49.0 points per game. McKinney is also a standout on defense, leading the team in tackles with 21.0. South Georgia, formerly Cape Fear, leads the all-time series with the Wolves, 3-2.
