Bakersfield Blitz News Release

Bakersfield, Calif. – The Bakersfield Blitz of the af2 have announced that wide receiver Steve Wofford has been assigned to the team from the af2 league office.

A native of Bakersfield, Wofford, 27, played with the Blitz in 2002. In 14 games, he scored 30 touchdowns to lead the team in overall points, and with 180, he had more than twice as many as the next closest player. He was the team’s top receiver, pulling in 107 catches for 1,248 yards and 24 touchdowns. He averaged over 89 yards per game as a receiver. At running back, he notched four touchdowns on just 15 carries, and in returning kicks, he averaged over 20 yards per return with two scores. Wofford had 10 of the team’s 16 field goal returns for better than a 17-yard average.

Wofford did not play during 2003, but currently resides in Bakersfield and is employed at Bill Wright Toyota.

“Rick Van Horne is one of the best coaches I’ve ever played for,” said Wofford. “He’s a great coach and a great people person and I think he’ll be more successful at this level than any he’s been at. I really missed football, but Rick being the head coach had a lot to do with me coming back.”

Wofford graduated in 1995 from Bakersfield High School, where he played running back and set new state records for rushing yards and touchdowns. He also played running back at Southern University in Baton Rouge, LA, where he was a teammate of Blitz OL/DL Coach Brett Clark. In 1997, he set a Heritage Classic record with 164 yards rushing. In 2000, he was a first-team all-conference and Offensive Player of the Year and led the league with 1,359 yards on the ground. That summer, the St. Louis Rams drafted him in the 7th round.

The Blitz will host an open tryout camp on February 28th at the Bakersfield Convention Center, adjacent to Centennial Garden. The camp will run from 10:00am – 3:00pm.
